New Year & after Jan 6 need to lose some lbs,. Jan. 6 is my Birthday so forget dieting before than.

My plan is low carbs. & 2 a day 45 min walks.

I'm 185lbs & really should be 155-165 min.

Hi I was told about some seeds (CHIA) So I started using them late october...They worked well for me. Lost 15 lbs in 2 months.

I combined these seeds in my diet of healthier lighter eating and bingo it worked well for me!!

Just add them to yogurt or cereal in the am and maybe some more at lunch or afternoon and eat less in the later part of the day. You need to drink plenty of water with them aswell. These seeds swell up in your stomach with the water and make you feel fuller. They are actually pretty healthy too. Google Chia seeds.

Let me know if you need more info.

Best of Luck :-*

--In fact give yourself some casting lessons as a birthday present.
--Keep some fish to eat when in an appropriate fishing area.
--Row, Row, Row your boat. etc.

I absolutely cut down on my sugar and salt intake and have lost 15 lbs since sept. it hasn't been easy being a chochoholic for most of my 60 yrs. and pretty well everything you buy that is processed has too much salt in it, bu t i just pay attention to everything I put eat and ask myself "is this high in sugar or salt?" if the answer is yes I just pass on it.

I've lost a good chunk of weight in the last few years on a lower carb diet.
Don't starve yourself of carbs though, as your body will not like it and you will probably binge on something.

My first rule was: no french fries, no potato chips, no pasta. (Although I do eat some french fries and corn chips now).
All of these foods have a large amount of carbs in them in the form of starch.

A good thing to check is the carb level of your meals - you should be able to find common foods listed on the Internet.
You should target for about 70-80 grams of carbs for each meal unless you are an active person.

Look at the labels of some of the foods you eat now.
Kraft dinner has something like 250 grams of carbs for the whole box (almost 3 meals in one!)
I used to eat the caesar salad pita from 7-11 thinking it was reasonable healthy - something like 200 grams of carbs.

The twice-a-day walking is going to help a lot if you are not currently active.
I am noticeably thinner a couple of days after a major walk (1.5 hrs).

Fad diets don't work.  At least they didn't for me.  I started a lifestyle change last Christmas (2008) and in six months, I lost 40lbs.  Went from 207 to 167 and knocked 5 inches off my waist.  I had to buy all new clothes including fishing jackets and waders.  I've managed to keep it off and maintain my weight.  The key was that I realized the changes were for life and not just temporary like so many of the other diets.  Regular exercise is the key.  I work out 5 times a week (20 mins of cardio and some light weight training and sit ups).  Its become routine now to the point where I just don't feel right if I miss a day.  Either sign up with a gym or buy your own machine (treadmill, bike or elliptical) does not matter which one, the important thing is to stay active.

Developing good eating habits is important.  I ate way too many carbs and needed to cut down.  Before, I just had to have rice, potatoes or pasta as a side dish for dinner.  Now I only have a little or none at all substituting vegetables in place.  I also cut down on the portion size.  Some of the meals you order at the family restaurants are way to big for most people so I sometimes share a larger meal with my wife or just get a half order.  You'll get used to eating smaller portions in time.  Also, stop eating when you are full.  I made that mistake in the past.  I remember eating 5 slices of Pizza in one sitting even though I was already full after 2.  I didn't know at the time that 1 slice was about 500 calories. I now eat a salad for lunch 4 out of 5 days of the work week.  I make sure to change things up a little to make it interesting.  I make a large enough salad (with some protein like chicken or fish added) that I am full.  Of course, use calorie reduced dressing).  I don't really feel deprived because I can still eat fries, burgers and all the good stuff.  The only difference is that I am only eating them once in a while and in smaller portions.

Believe me it has been well worth it.  I could really feel the difference this fall while hiking the Chehalis Canyon.  I feel way lighter on my feet and don't tire out so easily.

Some good replies, one thing you can do that is very easy is to cut out your starchy carbs after 3-4 pm , in other words rice, potatoes, pasta etc are all cut out of your diet after 3-4pm in the afternoon, between that time and the time you go to bed just eat fibrous carbs ie salad, vegetables.... this way you still get to eat the food you enjoy you just eat it earlier in the day when you are still active and your body can process the carbs.

Another easy change you can make is the type of starchy carbs that you  eat, White potatoes , white rice and white pasta are all considered HIGH on the "glycemic index" which means they are harder for your body to process and are much more likely to end up as fat on your body, try eating brown rice, sweet potatoes (yams) or whole wheat pasta as these are LOW glycemic carbs and your body will process them to use as energy and will not turn them to fat as easily ...

I have helped many people lose alot of unwanted weight over the years, the biggest problem with diets is they are hard to stick to and most people can't and won't stick to them.... I prefer to call this a lifestyle change, you eat healthier to get healthier !! go by how you feel and look instead of how much you weigh..

Changing when you eat more so than what you eat can make a huge difference.

When it comes to exercise walking is one of the best activities there are, it is low impact on your joints and muscles and it keeps your heart rate at its highest % of fatburning, when you keep your heartrate between 135 and 140 bpm, your body is burning almost pure fat.... as soon as your heartrate is higher it starts burning higher % of muscle

when you perform your exercises ( cardio) also makes a big difference, try doing cardio before you eat in the morning, as long as you keep your heartrate below 140 bpm you will be burning almost all fat, because you haven't eaten yet there will be almost no stores of glycogen ( stored Carbs ) in your body which means your body will convert fat to energy in order to perform your exercises.

These are just a couple of hints that should help you out.

cheers Rick

Diets are a multi million dollar industry. They don't work. You may lose a few pounds initially but invariably you will gain it back. Exercise and sensible eating are the keys.

Same birthday as your dad "right on".
Well if I listened to Rod's advice "less time viewing FWR" (go out & be more active in other words) I'd only have read 2 of your reply posts...
Yous gave alot of interesting info...Let me write that down..."tape worms" ha!
Chia seeds in yogurt...bloat the stomach etc... I don't know about that one ...have abit of a sensitive digestion...don't want to have to wear rubber pants !!!! (worth a try...will do google search)
2x in my life I've done 2 week fasts where basically just drank alot of water. Lost 14lbs. each time.
Do not think I have the will-power to do it these days.
Weird part is after the 2nd day your hunger levels off... ya do not get hungrier as the days go by sort of idea. I guess the body just switches itself over to start eating the fat around the body.
Heard a story recently where this guy got the flu really bad & he lost quite a few lbs.
When he returned to work still weakened by his ordeal...his fellow wkrs. all told him "how good he looked"!!!! He felt terrible but everybody says "Ya look so good"....(because he was skinner)
Congrads to all of you for losing alot of weight...& the positive effect it has made in your life. (even if ya had to buy new sized clothes) 60 minute or Dateline yrs ago dressed this lady in a "fat suit" & put her by her "broken down car"on a busy street...she got no help at all & people were rude..."no time"etc... She took off her "fat suit" & this time she got plenty of help !!! Many people do judge people by their appearance.
My motovation is for health reasons though.
