Am working over in Tofino for the next few months and have already found that that drive gets real old real quick this time of year so will probably be staying over there every other weekend. Have been doing a bit of research into some of the local flows and would love to get into a wild Steelhead. If anyone has any info or experience they wish to share that would be I would be grateful especially regarding good access points as I am going to be on my own and don't know the area.

BTW What a spectacular part of the world - was a shitty drive back to Vancouver today but all the storm blown out river and creeks on the way back made it worthwhile.

Also forgot to mention - can anyone recommend a good map of that area beside the back trails map book?

Be careful what you mention on the internet. Many people don't like their little streams being mentioned on the forum. Sometimes taking the time to explore a river is the best way to learn it. If you're over there working just talk a walk in waders after work and forget the rod. Look for fish, look for fishy water. Then come back the next day with a rod.

Apologies to those concerned by the more specific aspects of my post have removed them. Don't have any time on weekdays to explore / fish as i work very long days when I am out of town. Am looking for very general information - what are the roads like, how long to get there, is it wise to go there alone etc. It's a new area to me and it would be good to get some pointers rather than going there cold this time of year.

Check with the tackle shop in Port Alberni...tackle shops are always a great resource.

Thanks for the replies! Already checked with Gone fishing when I was in there the other day, they were helpful but hadn't actually been to any of the rivers. Do you mean the pizza shop in Tofino?

tofino area is tough without doing major exploring. I have spent half my time in the area for the last 5 years with a dirt bike, canoe, truck and on foot. I can tell you that the only thing you can do is hit different waters all the time because timing is everything over there. While it is well within your right to catch and release a wild steelie i have chosen not to target these fish for two good reasons. One - there simply arent that many left and i consider c+r of wild endangered fish wildlife harassment. Two - there are too many poachers in that part of BC who carelessly decimate our fish, any added pressure is just making matters worse. I have switched to cutties only and if you get a steelhead by chance its a bonus.
