Not sure if I would like to spend a grand on a canoe for the family. Does anyone know if you can get a canoe for around $500?

Check out the craigslist, all sorts of canoes for under $500 on there.

I second that, craigslist is probably your best bet, I see them on there all the time for around 300-600 dollars. The only place I have seen them new around that price range is canadian tire, not sure of the quality though.

Check out Canadian Tire. They usually have some good quality Coleman's.

Best bet is probably craigslist, you could also try looking for some local forums such as http://www.vankayak.org/forum/index.php.
