Can anyone recommend a lake or a river.....
« on: May 27, 2008, 09:23:43 PM »

that is either on the Island; or in the lower mainland; or in the Thompson/Okanagon; or in the Kooteneys; or up in the Cariboo or Peace River region; or on the North or Central Coasts of BC; or in either Washington or Oregon State, that has good trout and/or Salmon fishing where it is possible to catch the fish without having to fly fish (because I don't know how to fly fish); where I could camp on the lake (I do have a canoe) or on a river for the weekend (last weekend of June) and I would definitely be willing to travel to more remote places to get away from the crowds.

Or should I just go and purchase the "Backroads" book that gets mentioned from time to time of this and other fishing websites?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

Hey, youliketofish... you just listed the whole province of BC and Pacific Northwest of the US...you do realize how large of an area that encompasses???... if you want a response perhaps narrow it down to one specific area...

You can catch Trout and Salmon in all those areas using methods other than the Fly .
I hope you get really good gas mileage though. :o ;D

I'm driving a 1.6 litre honda civic, so yes I do get awesome gas mileage, and I'm fully aware that I listed the entire Pacific Northwest because I'm open to going just about anywhere.  I haven't had a holiday in 4 years, and I'm very excited to get the opportunity to go on a road trip strictly for fishing (as opposed to a road trip for work).  I would appreciate any suggestions.  Thank you!

WHEN????

We can't recommend anything without knowing that.

June- Lakes, Thompson Region

July/August- Rivers, Kootnays

Sept/Oct- Lakes, Thompson Region

If you want more details, tell us when you are going, what your experience level is, how long you will be going for, etc....

(last weekend of June)

If you only have a weekend you could go to Lafarge :) just look out for that Otter. Bring your canoe and maybe a book in case it's slow. Gang troll works wonders there.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm planning the trip for June 27th - July 1st.  I've been fishing my whole life (mostly out east) and have been trying my luck on the rivers for the last few years since I moved out west (and I'm slowly learning the ropes).  I heard that the Skeena, Kalum, and Nass rivers are usually pretty good for Springs towards the end of June/early July; is this true?  Is there also decent Halibut fishing off the coast (Prince Rupert) this time of year (end of June)?  More specifically, is the run of salmon usually better up in the North Coast at this time of year (end of June) than it is off the coast of Vancouver Island (because the fish don't migrate in large numbers further south until mid-July)?

I plan on using a guide for at least one of the days of my trip, so I'd like to figure out where I'm going asap so I can book a good guide before they're all booked up.

Thanks in advance.

That's the weekend that I am flying in to one of the lodges off the west coast of the island for 4 days of guided fishing for halibut and springs. I just hope that the fisheries stays open.

You can take a charter out of Port Alberni and fish for springs and halibut and NOT spend $5000.
