Job Description:
Subject: SPRING/SUMMER FISHERIES TECHNICIAN POSITIONS AVAILABLE – Cultus Lake,
BC

Fisheries technician position available this Spring/Summer at Cultus Lake in association with the DFO Cultus Lake Research Laboratory. The successful candidate will assist in the field. Duties may include observing fishing operations aboard a purse seine boat on the lake to capture northern pikeminnow in order to support the recovery of Cultus sockeye salmon.

Other duties include biological sampling of catches, assisting in pre-trip preparation, operation of a small craft on the lake in sometimes inclement weather, and other tasks as
required. The successful candidate would be hired by the Area E Gillnetter’s Association and be paid $22/hr worked. The position will run from roughly May 1-June 30.
The majority of work will be a split shift from 06:00-10:00 and then from 18:00-21:00 Monday-Thursday. On Friday, work would be only in the morning and
then start again Sunday night. There may be a good place to live available at a good rate during the project.

Essential Qualifications include: ability to work occasional weekends and evenings and to work a split shift as described above, freshwater fish identification, experience operating small vessels, valid BC Driver’s license, and a PCO (Pleasure Craft Operator’s card – at the time of hiring, which can be obtained through St John’s Ambulance).

Desireable qualifications: First Aid and CPR.

This is a great opportunity to get a foot in the door with fisheries work and with DFO.
