Another CN spill - Caustic Soda - near Golden
« on: February 28, 2007, 07:30:33 AM »

CKNW reporting that another CN or CP trail derailment has happened on the mainline near Golden.  Reports say one tanker car has spilled caustic soda into tribs of the Kicking Horse River.  No mention of the size of a leak but an evacuation of part of Golden may be necessary.  Kicking Horse is a tributary of the Columbia and is probably habitat for bull trout and rainbows.  Certainly the Columbia is.  Cheakamus part 2 ?

Latest reports are that it is not caustic soda but something else  :( >:(.

At work so tune to CKNW if you want to know more.  Perhaps someone else can add more info as it becomes available.

Only losers again, are the fish.

This has gotten out of hand...I believe it can be attributed to budget cuts within rail companies in recent years, but are the benfits of saving money through those cuts, greater than the cost to the company when it screws up like this...? Shouldn't be, but likely it is...

NaOH is some lovely stuff to be spilling. So since the Cheakamus how many rail spills have there been since? Just off the top of my head i remember one in the Moyie river, one on Cheakamus a second time, The spill on a lake in northern Alberta, and now in Golden. If they haven't done anything about it yet, why would they now?

What is Hydrochloric acid? What effects would take place to the habitat? How long will it take to clean up and is it possible to ensure a
100 % clean up. On occasion with my work we are near fish habitat and fisheries has someone over our shoulder the whole time. If
for what ever reason they think we have contaminated the water we can be fined huge dollars. Is CP being fined right now?

Hydrochloric acid is a solution (when dissolved in water at high concentration) that burns a whole through your hand when you put a few drops on it. ;) :-\ Like sodium hydroxide the water usually neutralizes it after a few hours, but the effect is instant, can wipe out most living organisms in a river if contaminated.

The EXACT opposite end of the Acid/Base spectrum from Sodium Hydroxide.  Either extreme away from pH 7.0 and you get dead stuff.  All of it :(
