Keeping guides Ice Free

Ok, this has probably has been covered...Talking with the boys, T.R. and Merc, they said they use vasoline??? I'm not sure if they were talking about for the rod guides or not and I wasn't about to ask... :D
Seriously though, wouldn't that just end up freezing and then you'd have a gob of frozen snot in your guides??? I've heard PAM works too ...(Oh that's to easy so I won't go there)...Would you spray it on the night before or before you fish????

Suggestions welcome, First bird nest of the season was wicked when I dipped my rod tip in the water and after a few casts it froze three guides... :-[

I use vaseline ON THE ROD GUIDES. It's petroleum jelly so has a much lower freezing point than water and doesn't freeze in this.  Generally will last all day but you might want to put some more on during the day.  Don't know about Pam but I imagine Pam on your rod should be okay (so long as she says yes!  :o ;D ;D).  And, you can use vaseline for other things such as antil squeal lubrication for automobile brakes!  Get your mind out of the gutter!!  Yeesh!

Just be sure NOT to use Vaseline (or any petroleum product) on any RUBBER products (yes, including those too ;) - actually ESPECIALLY on those!), as it attacks and causes the rapid breakdown of the rubber... that's why the washers on your faucets are not lubed with petroleum jelly.  It's a great lubricant, but get in on your rubbers tuff and it will ruin your whole day (or night!) :o

On derby day I used enough vasoline on my guides to supply a proctologist's clinic for a week it helped but only laste dabout 15 casts then I was regreasing. Better than nothing I think I'll try some silicone spray next time out it would be way less messy.
