Do you eat pikeminnow?
« on: December 10, 2006, 06:22:56 PM »

I have read a few posts in the past it sounds like pikeminnow were table fare?  In Washington, we kill them and throw them back for sturgeon food or turn them in for money.  There are people who have made upwards of $40,000 in a year for pikeminnow bounties.

If they are eaten, how do they taste?  How do you prepare them?

If you like eating bones you'll like pikeminnows.

That's what I was thinking.  I'm not one for bones, and I've always been told that they were aweful, so I don't think I'd eat one.

They are a voracious eater and consume tons of gamefish every year.  That's why we have a program in Washington.  I think it's part of the power company's task for mitigating fish passage through the dams.

I asked about this some time ago and the the recipe that sounded best (I haven't tried it) was to grind them up and make fish cakes.  They eat them here in Mexico, but I don't.  There may be something in the coarse fish part of this site, or in the one devoted to cooking.
It turns out that a fairly large percentage of the squawfish I catch get dammaged while being released.

Is there a limit on pikeminnow in BC?  If not, a good fundraiser would be to have a pikeminnow derby.  $5.00 to sign up, top 3 total fish or total weight wins the pot.  Funds raised could go toward river clean up or charity of choice.

They do that at CUltus lake each Summer. Gets a pretty big turnout each time and they destroy a decent amount of fish and some whicked prizes for the derby.

Their good smoked or curried. The bones can be used like tooth picks as well. Get used to them as they may be the only game in town soon.
