taking dirt from clam ( seafood kind of thing )

Hi i just bought some clams

how do i force them to throw / cough out all the dirts ?

Clams!!! That's what you meant....lol that was funny, I'm thinking "Clamps"? , what the?

Anyways testo, not sure how you are going to cook those clams, but when they are cooked enough the shell should open up nicely and you should be able to pull them all out of their shells and go on from there, but there shouldn't be too much "dirt" in there, you sure they aren't oysters...?

If youre on a boat, we used to keep them alive in water, and when the water got murky we changed it. Or put them in an onion sack and hang them over the side. Works with all Bivalves.:)

its called purging the clams. its better to use saltwater, the fluorine in tap water may keep them from opening. if you decide to use tap water, its best to leave them in for at least an hour or you can add salt to the mix.

I have seen some threads on preparing razor clams on another US site...they actually cut them open and clean them but then these razor clams are the size of your hand!

Otherwise just let them sit in salt water, that allows them to exple sand thats stuck in their system.

You said these are store bought?  If so, I don't think you really need to worry about getting the sand out.  If you look at the mussels and clams at T&T they are in clean circulating water...should be fine as is.

Growing up in Powell River, clams were a frequent treat for my familly. My grandmother taught me a secret to get the sand out of a clam. You can use either salt or fresh water. We always used fresh. take the bucket of clams and rinse them off. place them in a clean bucket with fresh water. Add 1 cup or so of oats. Just the oats you would use for oatmeal. The clams will filter the oatmeal water and spit out all the sand. You will be amazed by the amount of sand in the bottom of the bucket afterwards

Yup the above method is the one I used to use....very effective.....not sure what the oatmeal does...but is sure works!

Its been so long, I forgot about that...at Tan-a-Mara on the island last year we did a little clamming.  The resort provides gear to dig the clam and they gave you a bag with  yellow coarse granuels in it...it think it was corn meal...samething though, add it to the water and it helps the clams move junk through.
