as I'm reading this book on cures there's a ingredient here that I'm wondering about it's sodium bi sulfite. I've asked a few stores and all they sell is the sodium sulfite is this the same as bi sulfite any input would be great thanks.

i could be wrong but i think sodium bi-sulphite is just baking soda/powder

bi-sulfite is a preservative..I read the same book and have had a helluva time finding it..I finally got a jar...ask any of the shops up there and they should be able to order you one from pro cure...I've tried the local pharmacy's but had no luck...remember you have to have "reagent" (SP?) grade for the cure to work properly...

No, not quite the same, though both are preservatives.

A friend is an avid winemaker and he has lots of sodium bisulphite around. He uses it as a wine preservative and also a sanitizer for his winemaking equipment. You should be able to buy it at your local winemaking store. Check the yellowpages and phone to inquire. 1lb should be fairly cheap.

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. Use lots of it to increase PH in the pool.

Could you tell us which book it is?  What is it called?  Who is the author?  I need to find it as my roe has never worked as well as others'.

i know what you mean when you say it's hard to get hold of the sodium bisulfite (NaHSO3) I've been calling around and not a single pharmacy carry's this product ,and not only that but when i ask at the pharmacy they all questioned me as to what my purpose for it was after telling them they all had the same look  and i was re-directed to another pharmacy or wine making place and also just a note the wine making places sell meta-bisulfite not the same stuff.So after numerous stores i ask a very special person who happen's to work in the pharmacy industry and she also has the same look when i asked her  this product has to be specially ordered in, but i managed to order some in what a hassle for this stuff,after all of this i will have some extra for sale to who ever is interested.

Try a camera or photofinishing shop i.e. kits camera.  I attempted the same thing you are trying a few years back.  Now I don't bother and just buy procure

 A quick call to a friend in Chemistry and I learn they are indeed two different chemicals, but can be used for the same things as sodium metabisulfite becomes sodium bisulfite as soon as you add water. The metabisulphite will form two molecules of bisulphite with the addition of one molecule of water. This is fine for winemaking, but since you are using it dry it is of no use to you. My apologies to you Scruffy.

Just checked the ProCure website and all they sell is sodium metabisulfite. So Xgolfman, is that the right stuff? I'd like to try making some  roe from the Haugen book too.
