Test fishing results for Interior Fraser Steelhead in the Albion chum test fishery are illustrated below in Figure 1. Zero (0) steelhead have been captured since test fishing began on September 1. There are 13 years of test fishing records for the month of September. In comparison to these other years, this year currently ranks 12th along with year 2004 (Table 1). At this time, the test fishery results suggest that the run is either late or low in abundance (relative to abundance in recent years), or both.

The predominant brood for this season’s run spawned in the spring of year 2002. In that year, the escapement estimate of Thompson steelhead was 1700 spawners. The 10 year average escapement to the Thompson is 1600 steelhead. In general, steelhead abundance has been low and return rates have declined.

I hear this same old song every year and every year the Steelhead show up in Nov through Jan. I am always sceptical of what those BIO guys say about Thompson Steelhead since 50 years ago they didn't even believe the Thompson Strain existed. Now I catch large bows in August, that I think are Steelhead complete with sea lice scares and roe, but according to the BIO guys No Steelhead enters the system untill Oct.
