Sep. 27th, vedder canal chum and spring
« on: September 27, 2006, 07:52:40 PM »

hit the vedder canal at 10:30 , a lot of fish under the keith wilson bridge, and a lot of anglers there. I hooked 4 chums and one spring, just keep the spring and released all chums. How to post image ?

I have never ever seen a clean chum on that river in my life. I don't know but that's just the way it is there. There's lots of clean chums in the Squamish systems though

Had a clean one last year the 3rd week of September above the Vedder Crossing bridge.  Mind you there was more water at this time last year, but it was slightly coloured but certainly had the silver sheen to it.  Took a big gob of roe along the bottom.

Neither have I but I'm sure there are a few.

Does the colour of a chum actually affect taste, and why is it so many people do not perfer chum for food?

The color actually doesn't affect the fish too much.  Chum start morphing as soon as they hit fresh water but the meat will usually be okay so long as the fish itself is fairly fresh in the river.  Just check to make sure the flesh is firm and  that the fish itself is not a boot.  As to the food part, chum meat is quite delicate in contrast to sox, coho and spring.  Good meat used for smoking as it readily takes on whatever flavor you give it and for the the fat content too.
