My Summer Springs...
« on: September 10, 2006, 09:24:21 PM »

Sorry for the late post but I thought that I would save it up for one post :)
Only got to make 3 trips out but they were well worth it!

Outing# 1

Headed out with trailer neighboor in his monster Boston Whaler at around 6am. The day went pretty quick so it didn't seem to long until we hit our one and only spring for the day. Just about to eat my lunch when all of a sudden...WHAM!!!WHAM!!!WHAMM!!! Monster hits tore me out of my seat towards the rod. As I set the hook I could feel the heart pumping...as it felt like a really good size fish. After lots of good long runs and some what seemed like endless head shakes, we landed him...a 31 pound silver missile! Cuaght on locally cuaght herring.

Outing# 2

Trip #2 was the day of a fairly big derby,The Anuall Pro Pat Derby, and had never placed in a derby like that(consisting of atleast 400 fisherman). Thus I was really pumped and had that good morning feeling as my Uncle Bob gave me a rattle on the trailer door :). We setted out at around 6:30am, to the Trap Shack(point along East Sooke) to find a load of people trolling and for some reason people were jigging ???. Lines were down, herring had the eleet spin and the tide was a rippin. One of the main keys to remember in a derby is to make sure your at the weigh-in on time!! However...we seemed to had slipped up on one part of the day...no watch and couldn't ask for a time check as his CB was out :'(. Anyways we figured it was around 8:30am and as I was steering I happened to glance out the window just in time to find my rod bouncing up and down up and down and POP...off the downrigger! I Quickly jumped up, ripped the rod out of the holder and gave it a good set. I was very nervous, as it felt like a good derby fish and it looked like no one had got anything all morning :-\ :o. It ran really hard taking about 250yards but we soon got it in the net and in the boat.
My Uncle and I both thought that it looked like a derby fish but didn't know the time; therefore we gave it another hour to see if we could get another, to no avail. Thus we headed in to the marina to load up the fish in the truck for a 1hour drive(weigh-in was in town); however, when we got in we found out that it was only 10am and the deadline was at 1pm!!! We weighed it at the marina to be 26lbs so we thought that we would go early anyways. Not to make the story any longer, I came 3rd in the derby and only 3 1/2 lbs from 1st :(. Really close!!!

Outing# 3

Well here I am, 2 for 2 and onto trip number 3 at around 7am. Everybody said that they were hitting all the fish around Secretary Island so we decided to give it a try, once again to no avail. However, two of our friends got their boats limits in about 2hrs and we still had no fish. At around 11am we trolled over to Beechy Head and while we were passing a friends boat and having a small convo with him I looked at my rod to see something give it a real good tug! Grabbed it, set the hook...and FISH ON!!! It didn't seem that big except for its weight but I kept reeling as if it were a 60 pounder. Seeing as how the water was super clear we saw it a little ways down and realized that it wasn't that small. Turned out to be about 20lbs.

The Pics are in order as follows on the “Red Porn Spring Thread”, 31lb,3rd place spring,20lb spring.
