No Fishing around Mission Hydroacoustic Counter
« on: August 04, 2006, 11:27:38 AM »

Attention Fraser River anglers!

The area highlighted on the map is used by the Pacific Salmon Commission (PSC) to estimate the number of sockeye salmon passing this site. This information is essential for the management of Fraser River sockeye salmon. This information is relied upon to ensure conservation of sockeye stocks while providing information that allows the scheduling of First Nation, recreational and commercial fisheries.

Hydro acoustic equipment is used on both shores and on a vessel that sits at anchor while also cruising from shore to shore to determine a full estimate of fish passage. This vessel requires uninterrupted operation on an hourly basis 24 hours per day. Fishing activity close to the echo-sounding equipment has been shown to disrupt fish behavior, which in turn disrupts the ability of the echo-sounding vessel to gather complete data.

All vessels engaged in fishing are required to avoid the highlighted area on the map. There are white triangular fishing boundary signs posted on the river bank above and below the site to help you determine where the exact boundaries are located.
