Vedder Report from Steelieman
« on: February 11, 2006, 04:47:55 PM »

Decided to go out for the late morning bite. Water looks good and the wind has dissipated. Tried down the canal but did not see anything so I decided to fish above the canal a bit. Settled into this nice run with no one around. Fished for about half hour but nothing until this guy in a red 4 X 4 stopped and fished a few hundred yards from me. Within 3 or 4 cast, he got one.

I envied his ability to catch a fish but not his ignorance of bonking the fish and continuing to fish again. I debated whether I should go over to let him know but decided not to just in case he is the violent type. I am sure he knew the regulation as he hid the fish away before fishing again.
I did not get anything today!!!!! :'( :'(

What a bummer.  You mean he hid the fish away in plain sight of you?  He probably did not register his fish then.  We need more CO around. You are not obligated to confront him, 'cause we are not required to take such risky step.  Perhaps as Rod alwasys say, call DFO & report violation, but we know it may not lead to any action, that is the frustrating part.

Yes i agree we  need more cos, hopefully most people realize that these guys are doing the best they can with minimal resources and don't put the blame on them for the lack of enforcement,i was talking to a couple of them at the chehalis last fall and they told me there are only 5 of them to cover the lower mainland and areas beyond,as well they spend close to 50% of their  time in the office doing paper work and court  duties, the problem starts with the funding and the gov realizing that more needs to be done ,until then its up to us to report as many of these infractions that we can.

You are correct in saying that it is not are responsability to confront a slimeball like the one described, as it may be dangerous. Reporting it is a good idea, but again you are correct the Dfo does not seem to have funding nor the time to regulate the rules. 1 idea I think could be effective is to write down make model and color of the ride as well as a plate number of the car, post it on the website and let nature take its course. Although this may not stop all pochers, if they ever browse the web site and see this info I guarantee they will think twice before they decide to kill a fish and then procede to fish again. The thought of being watch by all never sits well with every one. Fighting is not the answer but I know that certain people wil stand up for the rights of the fish especially Steelhead which to me is one of our most precious natural resources.

Oh Yeh I would have loved to have this guys info personally, I don't mind a little war on words with anyone who is trying to destroy such a beatiful and interesting ENDANGERED SPECIES!!!! Small guy, loud mouth and willing to educate anyday. Don't forget that some people just don't understand so if you are in the same boat as me pick your battles wisely. Fishing is for fun and is a sport it is not for an animal slaughter.

not to play devils advocate but a couple things you could have done possibly were to walk down and say "nice job on the steelie, mind if i look at it?" just as a conversation thing, could possibly be the guy caught a rb or dolly...granted he might have hid it away but he might have just been getting it out of the sun or keeping it in some shallows...

I'm just dumb enough that i would have said something, even if it was "what did you use to catch him with?" if he acknowledged it was a steelhead i would have told him "your limit is one" and if he said anything i would have held up my cell phone and said "tell it to the cops, i just called them and am giving them your details"...hell if nothing else it would scare the sh*t out of him...

I honestly think we all HAVE to do something or it will never stop till the fish are gone..i have no problem blasting guys but i know a lot of guys don't like to do that so the quite intimidation is a good alternative..

Yes!!! Gman you just openeded the door for me. I did not want to get crazy about the topic but the truth is this kind of stuff drives me nuts. I am with you on this topic. Too many people let too many things slide. Like I said earlier let the plate numbers and the cars descriptions go. I think it takes a joint effort by everyone too take these butchers down. THE BIGGER THEY ARE THE HARDER THEY FALL!!!! A holes like this are what ruin the fisheries for everybody so if you do not want the confrontation I know many men who will gladly step up and take the responsibility for you. To tolerate such an action is unacceptable so give the description and I guarantee there is an oldschool or even a young animal that will save are steelhead and our dignity. Gman keep up the good work and I guarantee I got your back on this anyday. People let stuff slide too much and if someone doesn't step up and swing then we all might as well gillnet the river and finish aquatic life for good.  Lets go guys call em out one man can't beat an army.  PROTECT OUR FISH or soon there will be no fish to protect.........

If you can believe it, I was checked by a CO on the Little Campbell this week. What an effective use of one of only 3 CO's in the whiole Lower Mainland!
