local stocked lakes for a 3 year old
« on: December 09, 2015, 05:48:59 PM »

My youngest is 3 and is desperate for me to take him fishing. I took him out today and bought him an ultra light trout spinning rod set up. Needless to say the fire is adequately fueled!

How are the local lakes fishing? Is it worth taking him out? Those of you with young kids know how a cold day without fish doesn't exactly compliment the 3 minute attention span.

Cheers

Don't know where you're located, but I take my 2 year old to the Stave Lake boat launch to catch chub and "pikeminnows". In the summer it's fast and furious, but I'm not sure how it would be at this colder time of year. Good luck wherever you end up!

not many places to fish right now with the heavy rains, :-\ most small lakes will be fished out as last stockings were Oct or early Nov
and the rivers will be too high or to murky.
You may want to wait for a dryer spell to give the rivers a chance to drop and clear up 8)
good luck and enjoy your fishing days with the young one :)

you could try for shiner perch off the local piers, my kids were having a blast 2 weeks ago getting perch to follow shrimp bait.

Ditto. Stocked lakes will still have fish, but for the commonly visited urban ones (Green Timbers, Lafarge, Como) I find they get depleted very quick. I've tried them lately and activity is very low, but you may get lucky! I prefer Rolley Lake, as far as local stocked lakes go. Lesser used, so even a while after stocking you can usually get something, even if it's just small rainbows. Nice walk/bike ride regardless, and shore access around the entire lake.

Happy fishing!

yeah , you should try rice lake before it frozen again , but not sure if its a good idea with 3 year old ... you can fish from the dock but I didn`t see any action on it , while me and my bud were slaying them in some "not easy accessible spots" .
I will go to rice on sunday again , if you wanna meet up we can go together pretty sure between 3-4 of us your kid will have opportunity to play with fish :)

Nice offer hyenra.
But note:
It's a good 15 to 20 minute walk in.
(Maybe longer on the way out)
Dress for the weather.
Kids can get bored easily (not all, but 3 years old you might be packing them out)
Bring something else to entertain them.

Experience talking 8)

7-10 minutes depends on location
obviously its winter :) and will be cold .
as long as no rain and not too slippery on the banks should be fine

"Kids can get bored easily"

No kidding. I'm thinking of taking my eight-year-old daughter on a similar trip but I'm worried if the fist few casts don't hit, she's gonna start asking for a tablet. I just need to find a fishery that offers free wifi and I'll be fine!  ;D

if all you guys want is to "catch" the fish , maybe you should try some private lakes , I pretty sure there is one in Langley and one in Mission for sure .
pay and catch :) but even at those lakes im pretty sure they wont guarantee you catch every cast :) . sometimes it sucks , sometimes it rocks

7-10 yes, perhaps hyena but have you walked with a 3/year old?
Just giving a heads up as is not park and cast.
Most dad's know there kids.
There's other lakes where one can get in and out easier of should the need arise.
Not dissin, just sayin 8)

Take your 3 year old to the Fraser Valley hatchery and for $10 you can fish catch and release in their 2 ponds. Kid will get hooked up for sure and they'll have a blast. Also you can take a walk through the hatchery and check out the fish in the tanks and stuff so it gives you something else to entertain you both. We did our older sons last 2 birthdays there and every kid loved it !!

If you don't want to pay or drive out there then I say grab yourself a bucket of worms and hit the Fraser. Use a little bar rig setup and let them hammer on those coarse fish. I take my boys out for sockeye (which they love) but we always hang around for awhile far away from the crowd and let them hammer on these fish using sockeye heart bits once we are limited out. They have an absolute blast and the action I fast and plentiful  :D

My boys are 4 and 6 yrs of age and have been fishing since they could hold a rod.

Good one HOOK.
But remember kids are faster than you think so if fishing off a dock or pier and particularly moving water a PFD (life jacket) would be a good investment.
It doesn't matter how good a swimmer YOU are.
