Need estimates - and some help
« on: November 01, 2004, 02:37:57 PM »

Hey guys

went to look around for some good hardware..

found this: Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6501 C3 (i'm a lefty) for 169$ at a local
tackle store.. is that a fair price?

its a nice reel - not THAT expensive.. but is it good? is it worth it?
are there other stores that carry this type of reel for a better price?

how much would u guys pay for that reel ?
also looking at Shimano Catala 300 (or 301 -lefty ?)

Absolutly not worth it. I have the exact same reel and I paid $75 american for it. Plus the exchange rate and it came out to $95. As for the calcutta's the 401 runs around $500. Not too sure if you can get it cheaper in the states.

The Abu is a good reel, but not at that price. If you're gonna get an Abu, spend a little more and move up to the C4 level, it has a higher gear ratio and I think it looks nicer... :P  ::)

I recently purchase the abu garcia C4 for $160 and found it to be great so far.  I though it was a fair deal.

$120 is a reasonable price for a C3, and $160 is good for a C4.

I own both those reels and think either would be a good choice.  I use the Catala for the Fraser because it is more robust and holds more line.  The Abu works well for me on the Vedder.

The only thing with the C4 is that the high retrieve gear ratio seems to fail often.  My friend who does not abuse his gear has had problems with that.  He switched back to 5.1 ratio because it's stronger.  Check out Marine West on Fir street and West 2nd avenue.  I forget the price for the 6501 C3 but it's the cheapest I've seen it anywhere in Vancouver.  Seems to me around 109-119.00.  If I get a chance to check in the am tomorrow, I will post it here.

As promised, went and checked Marine West.  They don't carry the Abu's 6501 C3 as part of their regular stock anymore, but you can order it.  According to sales clerk, it takes about 2 weeks to get from their warehouse.  Price on computer said  $100.49.  Price on shelf says $107.49.  Go figger.  Still, pretty darn good price.

Merc's pricing advice seems great! As for the reel, that was my initial levelwind, although right-handed, I prefer to reel with the left. I now have two of that model (amongst 5 total), and they have successfully tackled literally hundreds upon hundreds of salmon and steel scraps! While not the highest quality you can get, they are indeed a very good bang for the buck, and they take a serious beating and keep on ticking! I'd certainly endorse them for either, and expect mine will be in the harness a long long time to come.

Cheers,
Nog

My friend has a C4 and he's had lots of problems with it. Some C4 are well made but some are junk. C3 is a better reel. The price Merc quoted from Marine West is a great deal.
