You can still use it thanks to me  ;). Remember that day for springs when we where searching the shallows for that piece. Boy you sure was lucky that I was there  ;D ;D.

Blah blah blah!!!!  ;D  I would still be using it, I would have just been done for that day!! :P  But yeah, thanks for picking it out of the shallows for me!!  I would have been waiting for ever for you to catch a fish on your own!! ;D ;D ;D

What reel would be the best for catchig salmon in rivers.

There is no single reel that is best for catching salmon whether it be the Abu's, Calcuttas, Daiwa, Quantums etc. Depends on your needs and budget. I find the later models of the Abu's not as well built as the earlier models. For what it's worth my preference is the Shimano Calcutta.

What FA said. If money is not an issue, go with a Calcutta, 400 for chinook and chum, 250 for coho and steelhead. It makes more sense to purchase a durable Shimano Calcutta that would last ten years than paying for several slightly cheaper reels over the same time span.

For coho and steelhead, other reels that I would recommend include Shimano Curado or Daiwa Advantage.

IMHO its better to have at least two reels. One small reel such as the calcutta ct 250 that is super smooth and will last forever when used on smaller flows such as the vedder, chehlais etc. and one larger reels such as a c3 6500 that you can take out onto the bigger rivers. The abu is much cheaper to repair, which is inevitable when you are fishing a silty river and casting large weights.

I also forgot to mention that in a platoon situation it allows you to have one reel spooled with mono and the other with braided that way you don't have to worry about switching back in forth.

*Assuming using mono on smaller rivers is your preference

That's exactly what I've done for myself.  I've got a Abu C3 6500 spooled up with braided for bigger rivers and a Abu C3 5500 spooled up with 12 lb Maxima Ultragreen that I specifically will use for coho and steelhead in smaller rivers.  I've never had a problem with my Abu's - but I don't use them all that much either as my Hardy reels tend to get most of the workout!   ;D ;D  Yes - I've spent most of my resources into my fly equipment!

my Calcutta 250 is my favourite reel by a long shot.. I also have an Abu 6600 d series which is also a great reel... and I have a calcutta 400 for the big boys... if I could buy one reel for everything and I wanted to spend less than $175 I would go with the Abu d6600 I think it has to be the best deal out there rightnow !!
