Taking a Kid Fishing

"Taking a Kid Fishing" usually results in good catches of pink salmon for both adults and children (Photo: Taking a Kid Fishing). |
Once every two years in Southern BC, tens of millions of pink salmon arrive to complete their lifecycle. These fish, which are between 4 and 8lb, do not hold back when a lure is placed in front of them, therefore they are the most suitable salmon to catch when taking a kid fishing.
A bi-annual event in Pedder Bay, known as the Greater Victoria Pink Salmon Festival, uses this opportunity to bring this salmon adventure to young children who normally do not have the chance to go fishing. Its "Taking a Kid Fishing" initiative, which does exactly what the title suggests, will take place on August 19th, 2007.
With the aid of over 50 volunteer anglers and guides, this event coincides with the peak timing of the Fraser River pink salmon run and takes over 125 young participants so they can experience the thrill of salmon fishing. Event chairman Daryl Kyba emphasizes that they work very closely with the Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Boys & Girls Club, Community Resource Centre and local schools who are extremely helpful in identifying children who would benefit from a salmon adventure. Currently this event provides all young participants the followings:
- a picnic (free food & beverage)
- awards ceremony
- hat & T Shirt
- face painting
- an individual remembrance of the day for each child
The organizers wish to expand this event so the number of young participants can be increased to over 170. In order to do so, they require more "skippers" to provide their boats and time. If you are an avid saltwater angler and wish to help out, please contact the organizer by using the information below.
