You might try fishing for smelts. Did that when I was a kid. Total blast although the run these days are a fraction of what it used to be.

I wanted to go to Jericho pier tomorrow to fish but looks like the pier is currently broken.. Would I be able to take my 2 person inflatable boat out a bit and fish for dogfish or is that too risky. I'm quite the adventurous type but I have no life jacket but not %100.

Thanks for reviving this old thread. I fished Jericho pier last year right after work in May, and I caught nothing with my hot pink 2.5-inch Buzz Bomb. I would have done better if I used bait such as shrimp, as there are quite a few perch down there.
