There is absolutely no question as to what that fish is in the 3rd pic. It is indeed a resident bow....and a beauty at that.

Angle of the shot with flash makes it look more chrome in your second shot. How big was that fish? Looks to me to be 4to 5lbs at least.

It was a complete bullet, those colours on it were barley visible in person.
Was over 5 pound by my prediction, super fat and thick across the top.
Compared to my buddies 5.4 he weighed in in the derby I'd say this fish was bigger  :P

DRP wasn't me, this is the first time in 5 years of fishing the Vedder that I'v seen guys fishing metal, seen 2 other guys than me doing it this year.
You probably saw one of them.

Cheers,
Dan

Iv definately seen Bulls/dollys and resident rainbows over 5lbs in the Vedder. They are rare, but definately a nice little surprise when you come across one.

I met quite a few spoon chuckers on my trips up there last year.

Yes, there definitely are some really obese bull trouts on the Vedder.
One I landed last week was so fat that it looked more like a carp than any trout I have seen.
It must be from feasting on all those salmon eggs in the river.
A powerful strike followed by flash of silver made my heart beat faster until I saw this squat little thing breach the surface. ::)

Bull trout on the coast are anadromous so much of their weight is put on in the salt.

I see. So are they in the river this time of the year to spawn?

Not likely. They spawn in fall and then like sea run cutthroat over winter in streams and head downstream in spring.  There's lots of info on the web. google is your friend!

20yrs ago I used to cast metal all the time. When the steelhead would jump I could hear the clank, clank, of the spoon in their mouth.

Well guess I'm staying far enough away from everyone since I've never seen it before. Must be a good sign.
Maybe that's why I get a fair share or fish whenever I'm home  ;D Granted I rarely get hatchery fish since I like to stay away from everyone (ie the lower).
I also tend to stay with one thing once I start it too, cover lots of water and don't second guess myself.

Best of luck to everyone! Looks like tomorrow might be my last day out on the river before my return to the peaceful waters of the island...

Cheers,
Dan

Lol... yea a few people have seen me around...
Last day out on the river, put me at 5 fish in 6 trips so far this December, all on spoons. Gear hasn't been doing squat all for me.
Was a good way to end the year. Best of luck to everyone this january to start the new year!

Cheers,
Dan
