Questions regarding tackle set-ups and rigging....
« on: January 27, 2006, 01:05:15 AM »

yo guys, i am pretty new to river fishing, and i am learning how to rig up my tackle properly now...
about short-floating, i tied a pencil lead in between the hook and float, 1.5 fts from the hook, and 2 fts from the float (of course it all depends on the water level and condition).  in this case, do i really have to set up a leader line? i didn't usually fish with leader line during salmon season, i just grabbed a few meters of the main line as my "leader line".  Q2: if i am to fish with pink worm, how do i rig it up? the pink worms i bought from berry's came with leader line, so, should i just tie it up on the swivel, then a weight on the mainline's and a float few fts from the weight?
these might sound like dummy questions to some of u pros here, well i mean, come on, i am a rookie!!~~   ;) ;)   learn from u guys, is what i am supposed to now. thanks a bunch fellows!

Hi sinaran, first i would use proper leader material for my leaders not your mainline ,your leader should allways be about 4pounds lighter test than your mainline, example ,12pound mainline with 8 pound leader, the reason for this is if you were to snap your line on a fish or a snag your leader would break before your mainline would and you would only lose your hook and leader, also another reason for using lighter leader is it is less visible particularly in low clear water which can meen the difference between a fish taking your bait or not, this is especially true in coho season when the fish are constantly swimming through the gauntlet of lines that are common on the river in the fall.As for your pink worms, first you need to have a needle of about 2 to 3 inches in length, tie your leader to the eye of the needle now starting at the top of the worm thread your needle through the center of the worm and pull it out about one inch from the tail ,the line should now pull through the worm as you pull out the needle, now i like to place a small bead on the line just above the hook, tie your hook on at the tail end of the worm and tie your leader to your mainline, the bead is placed on your line to help stop the hook from ripping into your worm as easily.Hope this helps .

Your welcome sinaran,A good way to learn is to watch the guys on the river that are catching fish consistently, especially the old timers, don't be afraid to ask questions most guys on the river would be more than happy to help out, tight lines.

I picked up 2 of these
to thread my leader line thru my worms. I also picked up a bag of sequins to put between the worm and the hook. I also have wool, and some gooey bobs.

Sinaran, another reason of using a leader is so your main line does not get shorter and shorter after each trip. My reel only holds about 120 metres of 12lb test Maxima. If I use a section at the end of my main line each time by tying a hook on directly, then I would be changing my entire spool of main line very often.

Unlike salmon fishing, you switch your presentations constantly when you are steelheading. Because of this, some people prefer to pre-tie their leaders with their favorite presentations on the hooks. This allows you to change from one leader to the next very fast without losing much fishing time. The more time your offering is in the water, the more likely you will catch a steelhead. :)

Some of the presentations that I like to tie up for my trip include pink worm, gooey bob, jensen egg and blade. I like to have these hooked onto a piece of foam that is easily accessed. If these are stored in zip-lock bags, they would require more time to tie up.

Below is a photo of what I usually tie up (ignore the sorry-looking flies ;) ).
