Lower Mainland Kokanee options?
« on: April 15, 2021, 05:31:14 PM »

Just getting kitted up as I really want to target kokanee this year but we also can't go very far from home at the moment. Looks like my options are Alouette, Hicks, or Kawkawa. Which would be the best one to target over the next month or so?

What type of watercraft do you fish from? This makes a huge difference on the Alouette. Personally I would fish Kawkawa but I deep line chironomid fish it and it can be very finicky this time of year and usually picks back up in a month or so.

I'm in a 14' jon with a 15hp (also have a 6hp for restricted lakes). Also have a trolling motor. Picked up an old scotty downrigger that I want to try for this fishery. Alouette is the closest to me but the other two aren't too far either.

I've read that we're probably in that transition time on Kawkawa at the moment. I've never fished that lake before so definitely going in blind there.

The kokanee in Hicks are generally really small as in under 8 inches. Fishing in both Kawkawa and Alouette varies widely from year to year. Most people still fish Kawkawa with bait such as krill right on the bottom. There is a lot of info around and think Rod has done articles and even videos on Kawkawa.

Back in the 70s my father and I caught large numbers of Kokanee at the North end of Buntzen near the Coquitlam reservoir outfall. They were all 7 to 9 inches. Don't knows if that fishery still exists.
