Centerpin question - line off top or bottom?

being pretty new with a centerpin I spent way too much time on youtube videos for learning the basics.

I then ran this english fisherman who seemed to make  good point about fishing a centerpin with the line coming off the top rather then the bottom - said it made more natural sense controlling the drag with the spool moving away from him...

any thoughts? most of the fishermen I've seen locally have the line from the bottom...

Then wouldn't you be reeling in 'backwards'? Sounds awkward, though I guess one could get used to it.

It seems he referring to better control the spool with the thumb. Probably not too bad when drifting, but doubt you'll be thumbing the spool on a big spring or chum. You'll definitely want the rest of your fingers in the game, and having the line run on top or close to your index finger like that sounds dicey...

Also looking at the way he plays fish in the vid, his rod hand is behind the reel, and uses the long butt for leverage. May not be too practical with the short 'west coast' style handles most people here have.

I think I'd just buy a reel set for the hand I was going to reel with. Isn't t5hat just a left hand reel on the wrong side?

I think the advantage is the 'path' of the line off the reel is straighter when the reel is setup that way however I would see a big issue getting use to winding it towards myself when retrieving or bringing in a fish.

Off the top would be a nightmare with a big spring on with only yer thumb as a brake.

If the reel has a revolving rim (ie an open frame) you can use your palm.

That would be weird too.. off the top would have the palming rim going in the wrong direction,  palm would be pushed towards you.
Palming is easy when the reel is spinning away from the palm.

Appears to fishing in U.K. for coarse fish (with 4# braid), where the reel is mostly used for line storage and any runs that you'd have to deal with, wouldn't be of a "rampaging" nature. Under these circumstances, the line "on top" would be a viable method. Don't think it would personally work for me, with salmon/steelhead but it's always interesting to see new methods and techniques.
