Lower Mainland bass lakes suitable for pontoon boat
« on: May 14, 2014, 05:10:26 PM »

Back in the day I used to do a yearly bass fishing trip out on the islands (Saltspring, Nanaimo, Victoria etc) but have never done so in the LML though I have heard some waters now have SM and LM populations.

Can someone recommend any local bass waters where it would be suitable for a small 6-8’ pontoon boat?

Might like to wet the line sometime this long weekend and am looking for somewhere that has decent access to legally launch a pontoon as well as somewhere safe to park for half a day or more. I don’t want to infringe on private property or drag the boat extended distances if possible.

Maybe its still too early, but I’d still like to try and scout out some locations. I have a pretty good selection of soft plastics, jigs, crankbaits, spinner baits, flies etc and would like to try any and all of them if the terrain allows.

Deer Lake has been on and off the last few weeks with the weather changes. A lot more 1-2 pound fish and a lot less of the 7-10 inchers. Biggest I saw this year was hitting the 4 pound mark and if you can get to the far side of the lake (opposite of the main park), you can probably catch some solid size fish because that area is untouched by shore anglers. Wacky rig Senkos and Texas rigged soft plastics punched through the grass with pegged bullet weights has been what I've caught them on lately, working them slow as the fish still aren't as active as they will be in a month or two. As it warms up the top water action should get a lot better as well as smaller tube jigs.

Google is your friend :)

Check out this link for list of lakes, streams etc. from 2005
You'll have to decide if they are pontoon boat friendly.

I also heard that Silvermere Lake out near the Stave River has bass.

If you go to the Bass Anglers of B.C. site, you'll find links, and info, on Lower Mainland bass fishing and info on bass fishing clubs in B.C and Washington.

I haven't done any fishing at Deer Lake for this year, but I noticed a lot of fishermen near dock near the boat rental area. I try to avoid that area because it's full of duck poop, weeds and motor oil from the boat engines.

I am a little bit familiar with the names of some of the local bass waters but just wasn’t sure about the accessibility w.r.t. usage with a small boat.

I think I will give the abbotsford area a try this weekend. It appears from google maps that Mill lake and Albert Dyck Park should have reasonable access and would make a nice multi-stop day trip. Fishtrap creek might be a possibility, but doesnt appear to be anywhere to launch.

Hatzic will definitely be on my list to try later in the season.

I’ve been on Deer lake (bby) flyfishing for trout in the pontoon and it was unbelievably shallow and weedy. Even dragging a fly with a full-floating line was getting bogged down regularly. I didn’t know it actually had much of a bass population but might be good for some local topwater action when it warms up.

Mill is basically an urban lake. There is a large park and fishing dock there.
