Baitcast reel problem
« on: October 23, 2013, 08:24:06 PM »

When my reel gets wet after casting over an hour,  it produces screeching noise and it loses 30% of casting distance.  Is water the culprit ?

Also another older reel has screeching noise when it is completely dry,  what can I try to fix it ?

Thanks !

Service them.
Take them apart following the schematics; clean, oil and lube them.
In the process, you might want to check the gear worms, pawls, drag washers and break blocks, which may or may not need to be replaced.

A fishing reel is like a car. It needs regular maintenance and occasional parts replacement to operate to specs.

My almost 50-year old 5000C spends a lot of time submerged and it has yet to screech.

sometimes it may be caused by the spool release button. If you click it down and it doesn't fully disengage the spool you will get a nasty noise and it wont cast very well.

I had a reel do this a few times in the same day. took it apart and found a few bits of fine gravel inside the reel which may or may not have been causing the problem.

I service my reels once a year minimum if they are getting somewhat regular usage

Thanks Hook and Milo.  Find a lot of youtube video on servicing and cleaning reels.  Will follow your advice.
