I was thinking about getting a new reel for coho and steelhead fishing currently im using a 6500 c3, and i was looking at the calcutta 200B and also the GTB, the reel would go on a shimano technium 12- 20 lbs medium power medium fast action. Any advice on a good reel in the 200- 250 price range would be appreciated, also with this setup would braided line be a good idea most of my fishing is done on the chilliwack river. Thanks for any advice. I cant wait to have 2 setups!

12-15 pound maxima is all you really need for steel, been thinking of getting a lp baitcaster aswell.

I think a Daiwa Luna 300 would balance out that combo nicely. More line capacity for that rod.
I run a Calcutta 200 on my 8-12 pound rated lamiglas.  I have a Luna as well, and it is a sweet reel.

I too love my Curado, it's small but very smooth. If you run a limper line, you can cast all day effortlessly. I also run a C4 on a HMX. That's a meat and potato set-up, and the reel is extremely dependable, though nowhere near as smooth as the curado. And I like the low profile of the reel. At the price point you are looking at ,there's no way you can get a bad reel.

I have a Daiwa Luna 253. Upon advice from Andre at Pacific Angler I spooled it with 15 lb Stren (limper line vs Maxima from my experience). I was surprised today at how well it cast 3/16th crocs and 3/8 blue fox spinners (#4). Not a spinning reel by any means but not bad.

The Daiwa is an excellent reel. Smooth like butter, great drag. Solid. Though it's 11 oz. If I was to do it again, I think I'd get a low profile. At 6-7 oz, it'd be a very user friendly setup. Light and efficient. No experience with your rod so not sure about balance. A really light reel on a heavier rod may feel weird at first.

I was eyeing the Shimano's and Abu Revo's earlier this year for your stated purpose but will likely stick with what I have. I think. I believe the older curados got re-branded and are now the same as the more expensive chronarchs..could be wrong.

As for braid, I tried it this year. It casts really well and floats giving me really good drifts. Also, I never worried about losing my float, but the constant wrapping around my rod tip and vicious tangles I got when the hook popped off and flew back at me was too aggravating. It was a short experiment though, with 30 lb power pro, so YMMV. Give it a try and see for yourself.

Actually, it is the chronarch that was rebranded with a curado body.  Try the curdo E-series. 

Make sure you have a layer of electrical tape on your spool before you put braid line.  It will help to stable the line otherwise the whole spool of braid will spin over your spool causing your drag not working properly.  Another thing is line twist...  fishing with a spinner all day can cause quite a bit of line twist on your line.  With mono, it is not so much of a problem.  With braid line, the twist sometimes can be nasty especially when you set your hook but miss, the spinner flying straight back and cause your line to have no tension.  Now your line will twist and tangle so much worse than mono.

I have been using low-profile for years.  For fishing at Vedder or other smaller system, I think low-profile is best and light to cast over and over again.  There is really no need to have over 100yds of line.  If a fish spool you 80-90yds of line out, chance is you are not going to get it back.  So line capacity is really not an issue for me with low profile.

The Currado 300E (not the cheaper G!) is an amazing reel. I bought one this year and LOVE it! Ive hauled in everything with it including a few 20+LB springs. I have it spooled up with Pline CXX-Xtra strong mainline. Good line, as good as Maxima Ultragreen IMO, I just went with the Pline as it comes in 17LB and I could get a bit more on the reel.

The Calcutta B series is also AWESOME. I would buy that if you want more line capacity and and reel with a bit more weight. I was going to buy the 400B buy they dont make it in left hand! Luckily the Currado comes in left so I got the 301E.

Ive never tried the Luna but Im sure its good. Guys Ive talked to about the Luna say its good but not as tought as the Calcutta or most Shimano reels and require more maintenance and $ to keep them working well.

Another good reel is the Abu Garcia Record. My girlfriend bought one this year and its been awesome. The same size as the 6500 reels but has a bigger crank handle and stronger drag. Just make sure to get the high capacity spool as the regular one does not hold much line.

Calcutta B, Currado E, or Abu record are my top picks in that price range for sure!

If your rod is the 10 foot 6 technium I would go for the Currado or the Record, if its the bigger 11 foot 6 I would go for the Calcutta as the extra weight would balance the rod better.
