A 10wt fly rod would be very good for springs but it would be over classed for smaller coho.  Keep in mind if you are to be buying 1 rod for most lower mainland species, my choice would be an 8 wt.  It is a good coho and chum weight but can handle smaller springs.  I have landed sub 20lb springs on an 8wt when coho fishing.  It took some time but it can be done.  Having said that, it took a while to revive the spring.  If you are only targeting springs, the 10 wt is the choice.  My 2¢

I use an 8 weight and it is undergunned - takes too long to get the larger fish in and in turn can over tire them.  Switched back to a Double Handed Rod and FAR better.  Gives you the obvious extra leverage with fish but more importantly it allows you to control the speed of the fly far more - resulting in more hook ups.  Esp for Springs in deeper holes and strong water, slowing down the path of the fly is v important.

Check out Greys rod selection - they are excellent mid-range rods (http://www.fishingmegastore.com/greys-platinum-xd-saltwater-models~23.html)

My thoughts.

If you're fishing the ocean I would step all the way up to a 10.  The sinking lines will sink faster than the same line in an 8, you can cast the 10 longer distances, especially in some wind and it does have more backbone for fighting.  As far as duration of most of the fight, to me tippet strength determines how hard I pull on a fish more than the fly rod.  Rod line weight is only important in the last 20 feet when you have to lead the fish to net / land it.  Spey rods are great for throwing sinking heads a LONG way in the ocean..

Hi Cerpenter,
No worries, will call my buddy and see whats at his house, i left a load of fishing gear with him as it saved me taking rods out each time i flew from Scotland to BC, they ended up living with him as i ended taking more and more stuff with me, and this is trip number 37, i think his garage is like a fly shop now.  ;D
