Camping spots?
« on: June 03, 2011, 08:13:01 PM »

Hello,
I am looking for a good camping spot on a river or lake with some decent fishing within 2-4 hrs from Vancouver.I dont have a boat so if there are places that rent around that would be perfect. Just want to be able to fish and or flyfish and camp. I have never been camping in BC yet so not sure where to begin as I imagine there would be a ton of options.

Thank you for any info. :)

you can email me if you rather not pot info on the www.

Merritt is only 4 hours from Vancouver and there are literally hundreds of lakes and many of them have full service lodges with boat rentals.  Should be no problem finding a spot.

--check out www.bcfroa.ca and use their search engine for private camps mainly fresh water destinations.
--go to the advanced search section... can go by geographic probably thompson okanagan and south cariboo will give you quite a few within your driving range... can also select  facilities with rentals etc in the advanced search section

I recomend Miracle beach.
A little bit far from vancouver but very good camp site.
Also you can try samon fishing from shore.

If you are looking to camp and be able to rent a boat and be within 4Hr or so, then the following places I've been to fit this criteria if you drive fast and nonstop:
- Chataway Lakes Resort
- Mile High Resort
- Salmon Lake Resort
- Tunkwa Lake Resort
- Surrey Lake Resort
- Roche Lake Resort
These are all within 1 Hr from Merritt, and they all have websites with further info. I'm sure I've missed others in the vicinity.
Of course, if you don't need to rent a boat, then there are dozens more. Just look at a map together with a Forest Services website list for campsites.

In the Merritt area there is also Corbett Lake Lodge, Chataway Lakes Lodge, Salmon Lake Lodge, Peter Hope Lake, Lundbom/Marquart lakes as well as Kane Valley Lakes most of the lakes in this area have forestry campsites. The motto for the Nicola Valley is "a lake a day as long as you stay"....

tunkwa park camp ground

Tunkwa camp ground would be my choice in early summer .
You can walk and fish the shoreline,   or  go rent a boat from the resort ( check first to make sure they will rent to someone who is not staying there )     I do not know any other lake that has good fly fishing from an extensive shoreline.    You should really try  float tubing on Tunkwa.    Super easy  and the fishes are right in front of you.   However you might have to get some  lessons from the long time fly fishers there   ;   so many types of flies for different times of the season .
