I'm looking at upgrading my sturgeon setup to something with a little more beef to it. I currently use a Penn 321 and Lamiglas Big Game (20-50lb) and it has served me well as a shore rod. However, I've now been doing much of my fishing from a boat and I've hooked big fish much more consistently; I've felt a little under-gunned. I want a bigger rod (likely a Technium), but my greater concern is finding a good quality reel that can hold over 200yrds of 150lb PowerPro line, has a great drag (possibly level-drag), has a clicker, and is LEFT HANDED.

For some reason left handed big game reels are hard to come by. I've tried fishing with right handed reels and it doesn't work well for me. I need a left hand retrieve. Do any of you know of a quality Left Hand-Retrieve big game reel that meets the specs of what I'm looking for (and possibly have experience using it)?

Excellent reels Dion..... will hold (IIRC) 300+ yards of line..... I use the Penn International (VX?) on my boat, finally got my fourth for a set now.... Mounted on the Techniums they are an awesome set up and being able to hold 450+ yards of 100 tuff XP, makes me a happy camper!

The Avet reels are a very smooth reel and are smaller (and lighter) than the Penns.... they do balance the rod more and are allowed on my boat ( two friends have them and bring their own gear when we get out!).... make sure whatever you get, you get the two speed, much easier on the big fish (and you) for the last little bit to the boat when both of you are tired!!!

Because I'm right handed and like having my strong arm holding the rod. I can reel both left and right handed (right handed for centrepin), but prefer to do so with my left.

I was looking at the Avet reels but I think I was on their old site. What are the differences between the different model? They don't really have good specification charts for comparing.

Also, how much drag capacity do you need for large sturgeon? I'm looking at the MX series and they offer 9lb/14lb whereas the LX series are 15lb/20lb. The difference in price is $100USD.

Called up Marco at Nikka. They had them in stock so I went and picked up a LX6.0 filled it with 150 lb PowerPro, grabbed some 10/0 and headed out. quickly got into a fish on salmon parts and the rest of the day was non-stop action. Landed my biggest ever at just a tad under 7'. The reel performed flawlessly! I'm happy.

AND got his biggest sturgeon yet!!!

I don't know if you've fished with a Technium, but they're very sensitive rods, perhaps a little more sensitive than I'd like fishing from a rocking boat.  From shore they lack backbone and struggle to cast more than 10oz.  Msg me if you want to take the Technium out sometime.
