Chilliwack River, October 3rd 2009
« on: October 03, 2009, 10:42:49 AM »

After being away hunting for a few days I decided to try the Vedder this am. On arrival the river was packed per usual for a weekend but I found the spot I wanted to fish. I missed a few fish then connected with a large Chinook that because I was in a bad spot I knew it would be hard to land. To compound the problem a chap cast over my line but I was able to get it off without it causing a problem.

As the 20 pound or so chinook salmon tired it got caught up in some other line that had been broken off around a log. I tried to free it but after a while of trying I had to break it off. The Maple Leaf Drennam also broke free and was also left floating around but the current was just right as it drifted close enough to rescue it.

Some other fellows on the other side of the flow were snagging pink after pink and continually kept dragging them up onto the beach where they flipped around in the sand. Finally I informed them to leave them in the water when taking the hook out. Of course they disagreed with me but after that they did leave them in the water. I guess they did not know any better or did not care but so many people do it time after time and it can net you a fine for doing so.

As my time was running short as I am headed to the Salmon rally in Vancouver I wanted to check out another spot but first got a few floats from a log jam. ;D On my first cast at the Root Run I picked up a chinook jack that I decided to retain for dinner this weekend. Some other anglers there were getting pink after pink too. I mentioned to them to shorten up a bit to avoid snagging the pink salmon but they did not, I guess they enjoyed bringing pinks in tail first. I missed a couple of fish before I had to leave but I know where they will be on my next trip out. ;D

I took home a 36lb chinook ( weighed on the river with my buddies digital scale ) and a spring jack. Once I get the pictures back from my buddy I will post them.

Hard day fishing today, all over the river in search of quality fish but ended up SKUNKED! Managed to release 3 greenish colored springs.  Good numbers of cohos in the hatchery; maybe around 1000 already.  A good sign for our coho run this year.

Arrived at the Vedder around noon after hitting another flow for first light.  Super busy as to be expected on a weekend.  But I got lucky and managed to squeeze into one of my favourite spots. Seems like there is always a shift change around lunch time. Fishing was slow until late afternoon.  I managed to land a beauty wild buck(biggest of the year), a couple spring jacks and a couple chums.

I might as well say it as I don't think it can get any busier....can it?.....Coho fishin has been hot the last few days.  I've landed 9 in 3 days and seen another 15-20 hooked each day. Early morning has been really good but I've seen them hooked throughout the day. Friday afternoon almost everybody in the spot I was fishing walked out with a coho.  Middle of the day, 15 guys fishing the run and the bite was on.  It was crazy!
