i got a quick question for all the pros on here...
« on: November 26, 2008, 08:20:24 PM »

well i am wondering what is the proper way to handle a sturgeon when you catch one... i saw a pic on "face book" of some one using a large black nylon knotted net... water is say ankle deep? i am just wondering because i plan on getting into that ball game next season here, myself and i want to know how to do things the right way and no other way... thanks for all help guys and take it easy... you gotta get out there to what really is happening...  ::)

I'm no pro but I've done it many a time and it's dead easy.

No net though or bringing the fish out of the water.

Sturgeon are quite docile once they're tired all you have to do is lean over the side of the boat, slide your fingers down the leader until you feel the hook and quickly back the hook out the lip.

Tha's all there is to it.

Might help if you got an experienced guy to head out with you the first few times anchoring in the river can be a bit tricky and if a barge is headed your way you gotta move-NOW!!!

Ya Sam Salmon's right even if you don't go out with someone experienced you will need partner when you fish for sturgeon.  It's a whole lot safer.

Also, wear a pair of waders, which would make handling fish much easier in the water and you would not end up with a sore back on the next day. A pair of thick gloves are also needed so you would not end up with scratches and cuts on your hands when handling the fish.
