Gone fishin' losing appeal
« on: June 26, 2008, 03:10:03 AM »

Quote
Recreational fishing is on the decline because baby boomers have less leisure time, suggests a new study released yesterday by Statistics Canada.

In 2005, 3.2 million anglers bought fishing licences. That's down 25 per cent from 1995, the federal agency said in its summer 2008 EnviroStats report.

The agency says people who fish for fun are getting older. Nationally, the average male angler was 48 years old, whereas female anglers were 44.

Saw this in this mornings province. I am surprised down so much in 10 years but I guess people need to work more to pay high cost of living these days and with gas so high I wonder if it will continue to decrease?

I for one will not be making long trips on account of high gas prices so I am sure it will have an effect on some people.

As for fewer people fishing.  More for us right?

I was a die hard Sockeye fisherman years ago, but due to the cost of gas, I can buy a couple fish for cheaper than it would cost me to drive from Vancouver to Hope.
I definatly wont be making the voyage this summer even if it does open.
Bad for me good for the fish.. :)

I heard a new term called 'Staycation' on the radio - people are saying they will stay around home area instead of driving afar for vacation. This will be a trend when the price of gas is going up by the days. If it stays this way, DFO don't need to close any fishery, just set a low daily limit and the crowd will be gone.   ;D But people will then buy more from FN, so the fish will still be out of luck.  ;D  Perhaps we should start a thread for Fishing Linkup so members of this forum can go fishing more often. Not a bad idea when gas pricing is off the roof.

Yeah, it's a big problem if you drive a big truck or big SUV to get to your destination.  I think people will do more local fishing at local lakes and rivers.

People should be crapping their pants right now......the rising gas prices mean so much more than "driving" habits.  The way people live is going to change big time in the near future.

That clip on the decline in sport fishing is old news. Try 12 years old!!!! Like most things Joe Public does not pay any attention until the ax is at his neck. Remember Rafe and I were ringing the bell on fish farms three years before emperor Gord lifted the moratorium.

Yes sport fishing is decline and believe you me there are some capitalist who are wringing their hand in anticipation of privatizing it.
BUT it can all be different if the apathetic are willing to get off their _ _ _ _ and do something about it. Here are some of my suggestions to turn this thing around.

Carbon tax on top of high fuel prices? Buy American! The border is not that far away. Or how about somebody get creative and start a Fishing Train. We have enough good fisheries within walking distance from our rail lines. It was done until the InterUrban tracks were pulled and it is still done in both New York and Oregon States.

Take your kids fishing. What costs more a season of organized hockey, soccer, basket ball, base ball + the camps that go along with it, or a year of fishing (Kids don't need a license you know and you can get them started for under $50. The rest works for Christmas and birthday gifts). Also when you take a kid fishing you get involved in their life; instead of sitting in the stands watching or just dropping them off (that life involvement is a big plus during puberty when Dr Jekyll turns into Mr Hyde).

In short don't just complain, look for answers. Creativity, creates solutions, and we can all use more of that.

We need to dig a new artificial fishing lake like in Stanley Park where theres lots of cleared patches of land blowen down by the wind storms that would make room for a new urban lake simular to Rice or Green Timbers. ;D

Lol thats good, make the kids play that to teach them patience (and get them frustrated), and then take them out for the real thing during salmon fishing when you are hooking a fish every cast. They will ditch the game and do it for real life  ;)
