Prefishing for the derby Jan.18
« on: January 18, 2008, 01:21:32 PM »

Seeing as I haven't been able to get out nearly as often as I wanted so far this season I thought I'd better go check on a few places to fish for Sunday. Left the house about 9:00 a.m. and arrived mid river about a quarter to ten (daylight is awfully cold nowadays). Parked the truck and proceeded to fish behind every rock I could fish behind with a big pink shrimp. 24 to 30 in. float to weight 10" leader weight to bait, minimum 6 casts behind each rock maximum 10. Went as far downstream as I could walk using this method without any takes changed to roe and started working my way back. Just as I got back to the area directly in front of my truck (my dog was already laying by the front bumper thinking it was time to move on) it was bang float down, third cast through about a ten foot lay, after about ten minutes of what I considered to be a battle with a large fish I beached this long slender hatchery buck. Oh well woulda got me second place in the derby last year. 9 1/4 lbs. It seemed to shrink by about 4 lbs. the minute it hit the beach.

Great looking fish Nosey, congrats. and hopefully another one comes to hand on Super Sunday. I was out as well hitting the Lickman Rd. area. Arrived about 7:30ish along with daylight and it seems a few hundred other fishermen. Actually it was'nt that bad but as the day progressed so did the size of  the crowd. Counted 16 people fishing below me  on one stretch alone, and its Friday. :o Anyways, water conditions are perfect and there are fish in the river, as Nosey will vouch for. Fellow next to me had 2 on, first was a 15LB. wild which was safely released  and the second one he had on for a total of 10 seconds and then it gained its freedom. He caught both using half an inch of bubble gum pink wool with a very red single egg sitting atop the hook. Another fellow at the end hooked and bonked a 12LB. hatchery and one other guy caught a hatchery doe but I'm not sure whether he kept it or not as I kept fishing. People were very friendly and very talkative, and I believe I chatted as much as I fished for heavens sake. ::) I myself, (yes, me) had one good take down on a roe sack but alas, with age catching up to me my reflexes were to slow and subsequent invites were not forthcoming. I met three members of FWR today as Tee fished alongside me once again and after I left Lickman I headed to the train bridge area and came upon Norm2 and then Gumboot showed up with his beautiful new spey set up. And man can he use it. After an hour Norm left to head to Peach and I left Gumboot and went exploring for some silver. I fished all over down there using shrimps, roe sacks and colorado but could'nt find any that wanted to play with me, so I took my toys and went home. :'( It sure was a beautiful day and I sure had fun and met lots of great people and this Sunday is going to be awsome. Good Fishing All. :)

That's what I love about those little bucks, they all fight like they think they are big monsters. I got a nice 7 lb hatch buck last week and I thought the same thing.Nice looking fish!
