« on: October 01, 2007, 02:20:45 PM »

Me and a friend of mine talked about fishing. He said that Cod/Cod-like fish could be caught in Buntzen lake around June?

there are lot of species of fish in buntzen. by the dock they have a large display sign that lists all the species in the lake. "BURBOT" or as some call them , freshwater ling cod are if i remember corectly, present in buntzen. Catching them..... nothing like thier saltwater cousins. Best to do a internet search on fishing for them. You will have to check the regs on buntzen to see if they are a retainable species.... for local burbot.... ive caught a couple in allouette,,, several years back. They are damn tasty but not an easy fish to find. We have better success targetting these fish in the interior, 100 mile and north.

Thanks for the confirmation! I'm to try and see if I can catch some.

Okanagan? I think it's pretty far from here. I'm not sure.

You are mistaken.  They are not referring to bull head here.

Brown Bullhead

Burbot (Freshwater Lingcod)

I have never seen or heard of a burbot caught in buntzen. I live 2 minutes away from there also.

I saw one pulled out of the okanagan, and my buddy mark seems to catch a few out of the mighty bow each spring...

This was a 33 inch tadpole.  :-X

Wonderful! I'll try and go after those.

Also, there is a bullhead that looks like a Lingcod. It's much tinier and has spikes somewhere near it's gills. I mistook a Brown bullhead for a catfish once...

i once caught a burbot in the bow river outside of calgary however, it didnt look anything like the big one that was shown. are there many different types like the  7 types of sturgeon. the one i caught was very ugly. it was white and instead of having fins on the bottom, well it sort of looked like hands. it was definitely the ugliest fish i have ever caught. the next one is the greenling which looks very much like a ling cod but has a prehistoric head with a very ugly nose.

Haha, that really sounds ugly! :P Did you eat it?

It is? Oh...that's why. Does it grow any bigger than a few inches?

Burbot are ugly, but I have heard they are delicious fish...  That being said, I would not eat a fish out of the lower bow... as that is where the sewage from calgary goes and that is part of the reason where there is so much bug life and big trout on the bow.  :-X

Ew...O_O

But then you'd remove their guys so all the crap they put in their mouths wont get eaten?

By the way, would this time of year be a good time to fish for Burbot? And my friend told me burbot are really good too :D
