Hunting for Cutties with a Seal
« on: February 21, 2007, 08:38:44 PM »

Well I decided to get out this morning and chuck some of my new flies around that I have tied for the fry hatch. I needed to see what the flies would look like in the water. So I get to the river and I have a look around and I see this little black head floating around and then it is gone. I think well if there was any fish around they are now gone into the depth of it's belly but I strip out the line and begin to work the water. I worked it down to where at the end of the swing the fly cuts over to a deep pool. I cast out into what little current there is a let the fly swing over and once it hits the pool then pause and then start to strip the line in. First cast nothing. Go to start agian and what would appear but that dam seal swimming around in the pool. We give each other a glare and he swims away. I am sure he was laughing the whole time. I now see him a fair distance away so I start the cast again and again start to strip the line but this time fishon. The little guy takes a leap and it is gone and guess who would appear about 20 feet away. Yes that dame little seal. Scared the you know what out of me. I thought he was gone. So I left the hole to the seal and I went on my way to seek other waters where I was not competing with a seal. I tried some more of the waters that I had fished in the fall for coho but hooked nothing. The epoxied minnows that I have been tying held up better then I thought and looked exactly the way that I wanted them too. The wind was also blowing all morning so it made casting into some areas difficult but at least the sun was out. May head back out on Friday to see if I can out hunt the seal this time.

I'm assuming your target species was Cutthroat? Have you had luck out that way at all recently? I was considering heading out on saturday.

First trip out for cutties on this river this year. It should get good in a week or two when the fry hatch. Or when the seals decides to leave.

Just head to the stave and look for risers. If you still can not find some them hit the deeper frog water. There is lot's there. Also look for the submerged logs in the deeper parts. You would be surprised what you will find there  ;D ;D :o :o .

Water in a river that is oustside the current... stillwater. Look for backwaters and branches off the main stem.

I might be there as well. If I see you I will give you some of the fry patterns that I have tied for you to try when the fry hatch.
