wildlife viewing... where to go to see bears and deers...
« on: September 15, 2006, 10:48:05 PM »

Hey guys and gals...

I have some family that are going to be going back to italy on Monday.  I have asked them what they wanted to spend the weekend doing being this is the last weekend for the trip.. My cousin wants to see animals such as bear and deer and take pictures.... Where do i take them.. I dont want to go to far.... but at the same time they want to go somewhere where we can also go for a hike... I was thinking of bringing them up to grouse mountain to see the grizzlys but they lauged and said that they thougt those were somebodys pets.....

My last thought is maybe Squamish..... Have any of you seen any deers or bears in the wild while fishing in squamish.. i was thinking of doing that and then maybe hitting a local lake in squamish... but first and foremost is the wild animals...

your thoughts appreciated...

For a memorable trip take them up the Grouse Grind and then see the grizzlies.

2 years ago while fishing the Cheakamus around Fergies Lodge (first bridge) I saw a small black bear on a number of occasions.  I believe Rod "ran into" (lol) a deer or 2 a few miles up Squamish Main after the Paradise Valley turnoff.  I have even seen a black bear at the side of the road by Furry Creek.  If you go all the way up Squamish Main and take the Elaho Main you might even see some Goats or Sheep, and maybe even a Grizz.  I have fished a side channel of the Squamish by the Ashlu a few times and have seen Grizz tracks, but never actually ran into one.  A CO did tell me that they have been reported as far down as the mouth of the Cheak where it dumps into the Squamish.

I have also seen deer and black bear across the Fraser from Laidlaw, I think they were on an island, but they had to get there from somewhere.

If it were me, Squamish would be the place to go.  There should be some Bald Eagles around Brackendale, and the scenery along Squamish Main is friggin awesome.

Also take them for a quick walk up to Shannon Falls...I have taken out of towners up there and they loved it...we jumped the fence and scrambled up about halfway...good pics.

Have fun...

Pete

PS Grouse Grind is closed intil further notice....unstable banks due to high usage...repairs taking place.
