Short Cast, Long Drift, Short Trip (Vedder Jan21)
« on: January 22, 2006, 10:51:07 AM »

Got to my favourite run on the lower river before first light to find it stacked with vehicles - ~5 pickup trucks, all empty. No big deal...there is lots of holding water in this run for everyone to have first shot at. For the past few years this spot has been relatively ignored - secrets out I guess. To be expected...so i had my unrushed breakfast walked out to the river to find all the guys from those trucks pretty much cramped in one little area. Perfect...my favourite spot where I've C&R 2 in the past two weeks is comletely vacant.

I kept the pink worm on since it's proved quite effective early in past seasons for me. 10 minutes into working my way down river about 15 yards from where I started... float down in the nice riffles close to shore. The battle lasted ~5 minutes, a fellow working his way down ID it for me as a hatchery and up on to shore she came - with all the pressure on the river yesterday I didn't want to temp fate. She was a 10lb chrome doe. I took a couple photos with the digital camera on my phone...not the greatest but that's all I had.

Cheers!
Justin.

Well done, that must have been where everyone went as fisherforever and I had the "Old Hot Spots" to ourselves this morning. Fisherforever and I had hit nothing when I left around 9 am. Changing and dropping water levels can change runs. Runs that are excellent at certain levels and water colour can become void of fish be it too high or too low. Thanks whats makes steelheading such a challenge. ;D

Stopped in at Fred's on the way home and the Boxing Day Derby winner was weighting in a steelhead.

Noticed  "The  Master" is still in the top rung in the Wally Hall Jr. Memorial Derby with his 15 pound plus steelhead.

Will have to go this afternoon and see if I can do something about that. ;D ;D It may be tough to do as I have personally not caught many hatchery fish weighting that size over the years.

Went out for the last hour but hit nothing and saw nothing taken.

On the way out fishing when going over the Keith Wilson Bridge I saw a lot of 4 by 4's tearing up the riparian zone. Rodney has been sent the photo if he wishes to post them to show the damage they are doing and all the mud they are stirring up that will find its way into the Vedder.

There was some tragic consequences as well to this. One of the fellows had his dog running beside him, you may see him in one of the photo's. 5 seconds or so after I took the shot the driver ran over an killed his Border collie. It was not a pleasant scene and certainly took the edge off my late afternoon fishing trip. :( :(

I hope for better things tomorrow as we resume brood capture and hopefully I can resume catching some more fish as blanked on Saturday and the 3 hours on the flow for the morning and evening trip today.

Maybe it serves me right as us retired guys should not fish on the weekends. ;D ;D

Speaking of dykes anybody know whether we are legally allowed to drive along the dyke below Keith Wilson Bridge ? I've seen cars up and down the dykes around the area and is wondering whether that is legal ?

Yes, through meetings some time ago between the CVRCC, FVSS, Chilliwack Fish Game and Protective Association and the City of Chilliwack engineering staff we were able to get the top of the Dyke from KWB down to the freeway opened after a few years of being closed. The area on the West side of the Vedder Canal from KWB down is in the City o Abbotsford as fisherforever stated.
