Crab and Pink Salmon November 4th

Was out crabing today and saw a chum skipping off Belcarra park. As always I had brought my arsenal of fishing gear andf headed that way.  To my suprise there were quite a number of pinks jumping near the Deepcove narrows, perfect I thought.

I put on my favorite "pink" spoon,  an ounce of weight and trolled around waiting for a strike.  It took about 30 min. and  my bait caster was humming.  I landed and released a 4# pink.  I guess the Indian river still has a good run on the even years too.

Bye the way the crabbing was decent aswell.

If anyone else has caught pinks here lately I would love to hear about it.

I wasn't aware there would be any Pinks around these parts this year.

The BIG run comes every odd-numbered year, but there is a small run that comes through in the even-numbered years. Not enough for many people to actively target them.

If you see them they are there,  and go for them.  I was just killing time waiting for the crab traps.  Tight lines.

It's every odd year that the pinks arrive in LARGE  numbers.

Just out of curiousity, do the scientists know why the runs alternate from large to small? Or for that matter why are other salmon runs on a 4 year cycle?

Pinks are two year returning fish.  The even year Fraser river run got wiped out some time ago.

Other salmon are all 95+% 4yr fish.

I think cohos are usually 3 year fish.  Sockeye, chum and chinook are mainly 4 years.

I believe most river systems on the coast have a much larger pink run on one cycle and a smaller one on the other.  It is unusual to have strong runs on both cycles.  It's the same with sockeye - usually one of the four years is dominant.  Mother nature has her own reasons I guess but that's the way it usually ends up.

dfo should get the even year run much stronger. this would provide more angling oppurtunities......less strain on the other species such as the coho and definately be better for the fraser fishery as a whole. bring the even year eggs from vancouver island or the states and get this thing going. mother nature took the evn year run away but we can bring it back the way it is supposed to be. just my 2 cents. these pinks provide good sportfishing on lite/medium tackle.
