Puntledge
« on: November 01, 2004, 01:43:38 PM »

I finally got my chance to fish the Puntledge this weekend. Wasn't feeling that hot but needed to get some fresh air for a couple hours. Headed 5 minutes down the road from the future inlaws and started to fish some seams in a nice run below the hatchery. Nothing but chum and LOTS of them. The river is just polluted with them right now. Pretty much non stop action as they bite anything that annoys them. Moved on to the lower river after a half hour of c&r in search of some fresh fish.

First cast in the lower river a beautiful chrome ~15lb chum hits my copper colorodo blade but could not bring it in fast enough for the guys that began to crowd me...they were chatting about using a 40lb test leader and 50lb main. I was using 10lb and 12lb. No one around for a good 100ft when I hooked up but did it ever crowd quickly. I kind of realized that this area is the Puntledge's version of the Vedder's Kieth Wilson Bridge. After 10 minutes of battling and making up no ground and holding up the gong show I broke it off and moved on to avoid any problems with the locals.

No coho...they apparently are done for the season  :(.

I think I was one of the very few using a float and not using fireline. It was pretty much a floss fest and shoulder to shoulder in many sections. After two hours of touring and finding a couple nice runs to fish alone I was done. I'll give this one a go earlier next year.

Cheers ;D

The Puntledge runs from Comox Lake right through downtown Courtenay. Nice little river.
