Differing brands of 2106 rods
« on: June 20, 2023, 08:31:32 AM »

The Sage 2106 sells for $875 to $1150. the Trophy sells for a much lower price, maybe $175 used...not sure of MSRP.
What are the reasons for this wild difference?
I have never used either rod.

buy the most expensive one you can afford, so you don't have to upgrade every year.

The Trophy XL Titan 2106 retails for $299 and somewhat recently you used to be able to have a custom Sage 2106 built to your liking for around $750. Still a large difference but not as drastic as the first post made it out to be.

Is the Sage twice as good? Well, that's in the eye and opinion of the beholder. A custom rod built to your taste is definitely going to look better, probably have nicer components and a handle length tailored to your preference. Action wise, there is a reason Sage blanks are often attempted to be duplicated or reference as to how similar they are to a sage xxxx. No doubt part of the price is in the name but their blanks are made in the USA in WA state vs made overseas in Asia if thats important to you.

My first pin rod was a Trophy XL and although the cork and components were not that great, it did the job and I caught a lot of fish with it. I currently have a few Sage centerpin rods in different models and I cherish and enjoy them more but can't say I catch more fish when I use them.

I heard recently that Trophy XL now offers a couple of their rods as blanks. Not sure the cost but may be a way to save a few bucks on a rod but still have it the way you prefer
