Decent all around setup??
« on: September 10, 2011, 09:15:17 AM »

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on what a decent (not breaking the bank) type setup one would recommend on getting for fishing the Vedder, possibly at times the fraser, shuswap river, south thompson and such?

I am looking at what the best multi purpose set up would be and one that would also be sufficient for trolling/downrigger on the bigger lakes and such as well.....sorry if it sounds like a newbie question but I am just getting into the "bigger" fish type fishing and am really only used to/familiar with river/stream/lake fishing for trout so far.....with the exception of heading out to the coast a few times with a guide or someone who already knew what they were doing, lol.

Thanks again for all your input guys! This site is great! :)

Most tackle shops sell basic abu garcia baitcasting setups for under 200 bucks. Abus are good reels at a good price.
Wholesale sports in langley always has good sales. I bought a curado and convergence  with line for under 170, check them out.

When I first started fishing Dave at Highwater Tackle in North Van set me up for around $300 with an Abu Garcia Ambassador reel and a 10'6" Trophy Rod, great set up, still have it today although I have upgraded since then. Trophy is a great company, I had a rod tip fly out of the back of my truck and after Dave spoke with Trophy I had a brand new tip at no charge!

Thanks so far guys, much appreciated.....where as I won't be able to make it to the shops you have mentioned as I am from the Vernon area and will be getting my gear before heading down that way for a fishing trip (and probably many more down there to come!!) therefor will more than likely be getting this gear from either KenKraft, Surplus Herby's or Wholesale Sports online or somewhere else online (more than likely KenKraft though). As well I am watching the for sale forums for maybe some good deals on quality used gear even :)

So far for less costly rods I have been considering both of what you have mentioned in the Shimano Convergence and the Trophy.....Looking at the Abu's for reels so far as well. Would both of these rod fare well for trolling on downriggers as well do you think?....I would probably grab a couple more as well then to outfit my boat with if so and this is why I am curious to that (Boat will mainly be used on the bigger lakes around the interior and maybe kootenays) and would probably grab a couple low cost mooching reels/centerpins as well for this purpose....do you think that would be sufficient?

As per the rods; so say if I was indeed to go for the Shimano Convergence, I seen that there is one for casting and one for mooching/trolling but as far as I can tell the only difference really being is the casting hook??....Would it be fine to just go with one or the other and use for both purposes and if so then which would you recommend as the better option for both uses?

Thanks again guys,
Cheers

Ive have used a 10'6" Shimano Convergence and Fenwick HMX for yrs and both are great bang for the buck.( Looking to upgrade for the upcoming Steelhead season). As mentioned ABU garcia will do the job very nicely.I rock the rolls royce of levelwinds the Gold Calcutta but one doesnt need to spend that kind of money for a decent level wind.Good luck out there man.Maybe check out Whole sale sports in Kamloops.

Have you considered stopping by Fred's Custom Tackle, which is next to the river? You should be able to get all the drift setups there. I believe they currently are clearing out their rods for new arrivals so you might want to phone them.

Try checking Craigslist as well. There are always a few good river set ups. The best part is once you know what you specifically want want, you can re-sell the used set-up for close to what you bought it for.

Thanks for the info guys but as for Fred's tackle where as I would love to go there and take advantage the clearing out old stock sale, I am unfortunately currently stuck on the other side of the world in Iraq working and will not be home back to Vernon until Oct 10th and plan on either ordering this gear somewhere online or just heading to the places I mentioned above during the week of the 10th before I head down Chilliwack way for my fishing trip there from the 17th until......haven't decide yet, lol........I would stop in at freds tackle then but I really want to have gear before getting there so I am able to just go set up camp and start fishing right away :)...Only have limited time to fish the Vedder while there as for 2 of the days we are heading out on the fraser on a guided trip for Salmon and Sturgeon.

As for Craigslist, unfortunately there is never really much on there in my area otherwise I would just have someone at home go grab something for me if indeed something does pop up there.

I do see that Wholesale Sports has their Shimano Convergences on for $52.88 though!!! hoping that I can get one of my buds just to go and grab one from Kamloops for me if they are making the trip as ordering it online the charge $9 shipping + 3% + $10 oversize fee so not really saving anything then, lol.....still looking at Trophy's and now also the Fenwicks so I think maybe I will just keep searching around for now as I do have a month of sitting here at work to look still :)

Thanks again for all the info and recommendations!

Cheers
