It's been four years since I fished St. Mary Lake.  I'm planning to be there for a week on either side of June 15th this year, staying at the north end of the lake.  I know the places where there were lots of bass and the odd trout or two four years ago.  Anything changed much since then?

Yellow Perch populations have exploded and maybe that's reduced the forage base -Bass seem even smaller than ever.

Trout fishing though has been half decent where in years past Trout weren't all that prevalent so WTH?

Thanks for the response, Dogbreath. You'd think perch would be good bass food . . .   Also, I wonder why those perch don't seem to get very big.  When I was a kid I used to come home with yellow perch 14, 15 inches long.  Last time I fished St. Mary Lake, one day I set out to catch a mess of perch for supper, and I caught a mess easily, but the biggest ones were only 8 or 9 inches . . .

Hey Keith, we're not going this year. But some of the regulars who went on that year when we were there will be going, so you might bump into some familiar faces at the resort.

We were there last year and the usual spots produced. Actually the best fishing I had was right in front of the resort, including this one from the floating dock a few minutes after we arrived.



I've found the abundance of yellow perch to be around the same every year.

Have had 50 to 60 plus fish a day there,mid July, fluffy green leach patterns at the north end in the reed beds,warm lake no waders in the float tube.heaven!

You are just south of the folks home since 1985 and the old man and I used to call that area the strike zone. Folks live in Ganges now. Nice Bass!!!

That lake has a bad case of the itches (a parasite) we were always sure to towel off completely after swimming. The bite is like the worst mosquito  bite you've ever had. I always had a boat for fishing.

Duck itch................horrible parasite,used to get them as a kid wading for golf balls at the Tsawwassen golf course,giant welts and itchy as hell!

Thanks for the heads up about the itchy parasites.  Also for the fly pattern suggestion. What I did best on last time I was there was a bead headed nymph, which I've just bought several of, along with some smaller damsel fly nymphs.  Nice bass, Rodney.
I'll post a report after we've been there a few days.
