Pin Fishing... for Musky
« on: February 13, 2011, 05:54:09 AM »

I have never tried pin fishing before but I hope to try it this year when I come out to the Wack to visit friends.  The situation I have here is on a fast moving flow with lots of rapids.  It is extremely difficult to fish with gear or from the shore since the bush is pretty well right to the waters edge in most places, and snags are everywhere.  I was thinking of fishing it in a float or kayak, with a float rod.  I know there are no Musky in B.C. (maybe wrong?) but what would be a good setup for this. These fish get up to 50 plus inches on this flow but the average is about 30-40 inches.

I have fished with baitcaster reels for over 25 yrs and would use a heavy action 7.5 ft with a 300 series Curado and 50lb braid for these fish.  The concept of pin fishing is quite intriguing to me and I was thinking it sure would be nice to catch a trophy Musky on a pin setup. It has to be strong enough to get them in fairly quick because they will fight themselves to death if you wrassle with them to long.

Maybe it's no diffeent then pinning for Salmon but I haven't done that yet.  And Musky have razor sharp teeth.  Chirp in if you have any suggestions on rigging as well.  Oh yeah I don't want to spend more that 500 bones for a setup. Thanks.
