Lamiglas Warranty
« on: October 21, 2010, 12:25:16 AM »

Found an old Lamiglas drift rod which I haven't used for years. The female end is all cracked and the wrappings are falling apart. It's beyond repair. Thinking of sending it to Lamiglas in Washington hopefully for a replacement. Has anybody had any experience with Lamiglas warranty ?

I just bought a lamiglass rod from Fred's a month ago. After three weeks, the butt blew up on me while fishing on the Chilliwack. Never had that happen before with any other rods. Wasn't doing anything unusual; just tried to set the hook on what I thought was  hit with 15lb main line and 8lb leader. Fred's has sent the butt in for a warranty review. Apparently they have had problems with lamiglass on warranty issues so Fred's is moving to other brands. I am still waiting for whether or not lamiglass will replace the butt under warranty.

I'm wondering in those situations when you buy a rod and 3 weeks later it breaks, whether the shop will give you a replacement rod or backukp rod to use.  I'm assuming probably not - but if that Lamiglass was the only rod you had, buy the time you get it back, the bulk of the seaon might be over.  I think most guys have backup rods to their more expensive ones...

-- as far as I am aware... and this may not apply to all models the Lami warranty is limited lifetime thus only for factory defects not for normal wear.
-- Usually factory defect will show up in first few uses
--most rod manufacturers have a demo program, if the shop wishes to participate a limited number of rods for the shop or shop staff pros are made available at below wholesale costs, usually on a yearly basis.

--So what does this all mean: some shops buy the max number of demo's and just sell them at higher profit margin...others actually use them for demo's or as temp replacements for valued customers who have warranty issue or lost rod just before a trip etc.
-- Factory defect- common problem which may not be detected by their quality control ...wraps to tight around ferrule can cause failure.. not fitted correctly at ferrule...bent or rough spot on eye foot can cause breakage at the foot.

--none factory defect... damaged during shipping or in the shop before purchase and not detected...
--for example the rod that blew up after normal use a few times... may not have been damaged by the owner but may have been dropped or crushed during shipping or handling at the shop... thus the owner is not aware of a problem

--PR vs warranty:
-- if shop has a good rapport with the factory or factory rep, it makes a difference... for example if the shop actually promotes the rods by supplying demo rods for customers to try rather than just sell them off.  if shop is dealing with a regular customer they may offer an exchange for similar model or even different brand and eat the costs or offer demo rod for use.
--factory may deny  warranty claim yet still fix or replace the rod or allow the store to offer new rod or upgraded rod at greatly reduced price etc.

I broke an old GSH blank, snapped the rod tip off high sticking a fish...totally my fault.  Lami gave me a new blank BUT this was for an old discontinued rod that they happened to have in their warehouse.  i would not expect them to warranty and old blank like the one you referenced FA.

They will give you 70% off list price on any rod they carry if they don't fix it
