Jesperson Boat Launch - not presently there
« on: March 22, 2010, 05:43:19 PM »

Was out touring the valley yesterday (Sun Mar. 21) checking the Fraser for channels that "might" be there in the Summer.  Drove down Jesperson to what used to be a boat launch only to find it buried under several feet of gravel.

There is now a causeway across the channel there.  The builder has installed 5 pipes that appear to be about 24" in diameter to let water pass through the causeway.  There's a road on the other side that heads out northward to the south side of the main channel.  The causeway was blocked by a grader parked across it, which prevented me from exploring further.  I would have walked but it was pouring rain.  I couldn't see any evidence of gravel being moved back to Jesperson yet but based on them piling it there in the past I'd guess they ll stockpile there again.

Kinda far for me to drive from Guildford out there to check frequently but maybe Chris, or one of you that lives out that way, can watch the progress once in a while.

The other thing I noticed was the amount of aggregate that has accumulated over the past few years.  The bars in the Fraser up at Hope have been getting higher and wider each year for the past 3 or 4 years.  I noticed similar down at the Pipeline, as well as the Peg Leg area.  If Peg stays the same it should prove to be a real challenge for boats this summer.  The only channel there at present is within 30 yards of the eastern bank.  Boats would have to travel at a distance of 1/2 a cast out from shore.  Many that often fish there will be taking target practice on anyone deciding to travel between Minto and the main channel.

It's a new game every year!!

Yes, just another sign of gravel removal to get it while its cheap. I am really scratching my head on this one though.  Most individuals are predicting a bleak year for run off with rivers running at all time lows. If that is so, why the concern in digging out the gravel for "flood control".  Oh gee what am I thinking, I live in B.C., where thinking green means how much money people can make off of the environment, without putting anything back into it.

Morty

They have been hauling gravel out of there for a few weeks now and they have to be out of there by the end of the month at the latest but the rising water levels caused by the freshet that will be starting now may force them out earlier.

They have been working every day but on Sunday and block the access that day as you found out. Also they will not let you drive out there when they are working. The gravel was being stock piled on the Cheam Reserve for a while, check the huge pile out there when you go by. I believe they have been hauling it to other sites lately and towards Vancouver for the Province's Gateway projects. If you want more information about this check out The Safer Place To Get Gravel thread and at http://thecanadian.org/fraser_gravel_gillis.html
