Belated Sturgeon Vergin Adventures
« on: June 03, 2008, 09:11:48 PM »

I've finally figured the posting out, or should I say made the effort.

A few years of feeble attempts to catch sturgeon finally paid off this spring. I took my jon boat out of winter hibernation after waiting for the eulichon run to start in April. Since I'm to stubborn to take a guided trip asking a lot of questions in the tackle stores finally paid off. Funny they wouldn't give me GPS positions though!  ;)

Five trips out on the lower Fraser got me into seven fish ranging from two feet to four and a half. I let my son land the first and biggest of the lot. My best day was five with two jumpers, so the math is I got skunked two times out. The first one even guides weren't doing well.

My second skunk was two weeks into the freshet which had me hiding behind a log boom to avoid whole trees and roots floating by. To top it off my engine started stalling every few minutes. The Albion ferries were crossing near by so I didn't want to push my luck by stalling in their path. I finally realized a threaded connection on the tube ball pump was bleeding air. I set anchor twice and saw the only sturgeon of that trip mock us by rolling on the surface twenty feet away. The the outing was timed for the incoming tide, though it was hard to tell it was happening with river so high. The last tie up was to a pier ramp where the line produced a good crop of salad. When I went to leave, proof of the tide was evident from the 1 foot submerged tie up. My wife came along this trip and questioned why any sane person would be out there.

Sanity be dambed I can't wait for the fall run now!

Darwinism at it's best is when your wife connects her right foot to your lower brain. Sounds like you had a good time though. :)

my question is, how big is your jon boat ?  is it big enough to be out during an 18 ft. + freshet ?  thats where sanity should prevail !

My jon boat is a 14' with a small jet and pretty thin skinned aluminum, not exactly a Yankee sled.  I'm usually out by myself so managing the anchor and tiller can be unnerving when large debris is bearring down on you. It's hard to watch upriver and the rod without Marty Feldman eyes. I found the debris collecting on my line was lifting my weight off bottom too. I guess bigger weights and balls would be a solution.
