Locked Gates- Lower Vedder River
« on: September 17, 2007, 08:00:04 PM »

I was out on Saturday morning and noticed that one of the gate was locked closing access to the canal on the west side of the river. We had to park our car outside the gate but after fishing awhile, someone opened the gate. On the way out, I saw a couple of  ATV pulling in to "Play". Is the gate still close and open later during the day.

What is the point of closing and opening it later when the ATV can get in again? I thought the reason behind closing it was to prevent people from destroying the landscape.

You make a good point, as I thought access was no longer going to be allowed to prevent damage to the dykes on that side of the canal.  I have also seen ATVs and motorbikes ripping down that section of the canal that was supposed to be closed access. In my opinion, it makes more sense to grant motor vehicle access to fisherman, than to a bunch of yahoos, who could care less what damage they do to the dykes.

Because of the damage done to the dyke's by ATV's etc and garbage dumping the City of Abbotsford I believe has made the decision to keep the gates closed on the West side of the Vedder Canal.

This is the information I have been given. The gate has been open a couple of times because someone broke open the locks.

Thanks Chris for the update. So, I guess someone actually broke the chain on Saturday around 11:00 a.m.

Was out there today and even with the locked gate, I saw 2 ATVs roaming the dyke. They were driving it right down to the river.

A good reason why they should be licensed so they can be identified. It may be another unpopular move but I am working to that end with the Provincial government. Will be discussing this issue at a meeting I have in early October.
