I've heard from several guys that own the newer factory sage rods and they have one similar complaint, the glue on the reel seats is crap on some of em. Rather than go through warranty hassle, they have brought these rods to me for a seat/handle rebuild. So far i have done repairs on 3 baitcasters and 2 centerpins, all for the same problem. I too notice the extra weight and backbone on the newer blanks/built rods.....

Hey Big T,

I had a new CT2106 (Bait) factory Sage, but I sold it and bought an older (brown blank) model and had a rod made up.

Personally, I have found the newer factory rod a little heavier with a little more "dampness" to it, compared to an older (brown blank) Sage. In effect, I have found that the feel of my terminal tackle is felt better on the "brown blank" compared to the "green blank".

I know that many people would disagree, but then again, others would agree. I have the following rods made up in the old "brown blank": 3113mb (Pin), 3106 (Bait), two 2106b (one Pin and one Bait). I also recently found a great deal on some brown blanks; so I bought two 2106b blanks to be made up, or sold, or traded later.

As far as the components go on the new factory rods, they are definitely "bling bling" and high quality. I have put comperable quality components on my rods, but I prefer to have the subdued line guides in black or smoke grey. The factory rods are a bit too "showy" for me, with the gold colour line guides.

Basically, what I am trying to say; is that I prefer my old "brown blank" Sages. I prefer them because of the performance, feel, components, and the workmanship of a true "custom" rod.

My advice to you is: Before you spend that kind of money on a rod, ask around (like you are), and see if you can try a couple to compare.

Are the spey rod blanks made of the same material as the green or brown?  What color are the spey rod blanks?  What will the action be like?

ChromeKings..... might be a good idea... i've been toying with the idea of a spey blank drift rod for a while now. I may get to it sometime this spring, I just haven't had any time to go play with the blanks to see what kind of model will suit the action i am seeking. There are a few shops that loaded up on the spey blanks a few years ago when it looked like it would be the "next big thing". Seen as far fewer folks joined the spey group than many shops had hoped, you might do very well price wise on a blank for a project like this.

To all the people out there with factory sage gear rod.. If you have problem with the reel seat, send them back to Sage.. I called them the other day reguarding this issues.. They said they would VOID THE WARRENTY if it dosen't repaired by sage.  Just for your own intrested..

Allwaysfishin,

I too have toyed with the idea of a Spey blank as a Centrepin rod. I think it would be great for travelling, especially the 4 piece rods.

Let me know when you find a decent blank ..... I just might pick one up myself, and we can talk about getting it built.  ;)

Winter steel fishes a 1 handed spey from sage...I think its a 7126.  It is very soft, he uses it for cap coho and steelhead in lighter water.  I know he has been very happy with the rod.  I also built up an 8w st croix blank into a CP recently.  Its only 9' and I can tell you fishing areas with little casting room can be tough because it loads slowly.  If that rod was 12+ feet I would be fine though so base your weight selection of the blank to the target species.
