travel rod - surf casting
« on: August 09, 2006, 12:19:05 PM »

Anybody know of a quality heavy surf casting rod in the 10ft to 12ft length that is either a telescopic or 4 or 5 piece?
Otherwise, how do you air travel with something that only breaks down to 6 ft or so? Would it be allowed as carry on luggage? I wouldn't trust the baggage handlers.

thx

There is no such production unit worth owning-not in Canada or the USA.
Best contact a custom rod maker and have them wrap one.
Try Andy http://www.rodbuildersupplies.com/
BTW-Good Luck try to carry on a rod that big-you may get away with but probably not.

for any type of rods or watever.... they are gona be shipped as oversize luggage ... in a bag or not...

everytime i import my rods i use a pvc pipe.... just stick the rod inside with some paper towel and tape the ends. and it comes back to me perfect...

they will handle those oversize items as fregile item too... so dont worry.

as for the rods... it really depens where you get yours from...
i had a shimano holiday spin  12ft surf rod... that was i think only 4 peices and it folds down to 3ft.

ive brought both my sages as carry on luggage on the plane, ones a 4pc 10.5 footer, ones a 3 pc 9.5 footer  ...i might have that mixed up...i can never remember which one is which haha....in any case, the tubes are over 3 ft long i think, my most recent trip was less than a month ago....you shouldnt need to pack a telescoping rod into oversize luggage....that said it may depend on the airline...i usually fly westjet.

hi jiggy!  Eaten any radioactive flounder lately? hehe....by the way..."careful baggage handler" is an oxymoron.  Stand by the oversize ramp at YVR and watch if you dont beleive me...its pretty bad.  Maybe some of them do a good job but I've yet to see anything handled with any sort of care...just an observation...like i say, there may be some good ones out there too.

I have a 4pc 11' Trophy XL. It was the same rod that guys use bar fishing on the Fraser. Came with a tube and will easily cast 14-16 oz weights. Made for a bait cast reel. Bought it a Berry's Bait for $149.00 a couple of years ago.

I know the model you guys are talking about-it's in no way a Surfcasting rod.
It lack the essential characteristics of a real Surf unit-the certain flex 2/3 of the way toward the tip-and is really just a wobbly poorly (Korean) made club.
Probably the best you'll do here though.
